Skoda trouble

I am not having much luck with the daily driver, but getting a bit worried now, three weeks and getting a bit miffed.

On a couple of occasions I have been unable to select 1st, 3rd and 5th. Both times were close to home, though I think that is a coincidence. There was no issue in the morning commute of ten miles, 50% motorway, and on the other occasion it was after a similar distance but all 30/40mph. A light grinding like the clutch is not operating properly, but everything is fine at a standstill.

Gearbox is DQY with 02J shifter. What adjustment that is available has been done.

Unfortunately, 02J shifters are not flavour of any month, and I am not getting as much help as I had hoped from the Skoda forum i joined.

?Any ideas gents?

I am skint now, thinking that I was not going to have to touch this for nine months other than an oil change.

so wouldnt go in at all or went in with slight grind?

ive got the o2j in my golf ...you can replace the bearings in the tower if its all sloppy?

other thoughts are

any leaks on the clutch hyd , maybe worth a bleed

clutch arms inside the bellhousing can crack and bend so the clutch wont dis engage

worn engine mounts can effect the change ..would worse if driving hard and better at standstill

Does the linkage have any rubber bushes? Seem to remember somebody commenting on similar problems on a VW golf gear selection & it came down to lost movement in the selector as a result of play in the pivot bushes.

1st, 3rd and 5th would not go in at all just grinding lightly.
I did look at the parts required to rebush the tower, just a few quid, but I do not feel that is the problem.
I thought of the hydraulics too, but it would affect all of the changes all of the time. ?Would it not? Same goes for a permanent deformation within the clutch.
Re-engine mounts, all is well all of the time except on two occasions trickling along upto lights and then around the estate 20mph. When accelerating up the three or four inclines, all is well, morning and evening.

It seems completely random.

I have looked at the gearbox top linkage, and although there is freeplay in it, a plastic part pivots in a steel cradle, it does not seem excessive, and again, if there was lost movement, ?Why not all the time?

I can make a steel one, it has been done before and in fact is available from the US for $90. I have no dimensions which of course means hassle before making it.

wonder if the oil is low and its getting hot?

although doesnt seem to add up how it just did it randomly , i spose the hydraulics could be starting to fail , if it happens again pump the clutch alot and see if it helps

what are you thinking of making in steel ? if got a few spare bits about and would measure if i have one

changing the gearbox oil might help matters

Tho could be the synchros failing
IIRC...on my vectra 1,3,5 were on the same stack with 2,4,R on the other...

The first one I like, the second one...not so much.

?Would the random nature point to the latter?

have someone sit in the car and work through the gears while you closley watch the tower , push and prod it to see if theres any excess slop or binding

mine had the top tower bearing rusty as hell , its not huge money for that and a new seal

My guess is you are not going to like it.... sounds like clutch/dmf is on the way out

so all is well in a morning and evening, is this when the car is cold ? and when warm you have the trouble ? if so when you come to a point its hard to get into 1st turn the engine off and try again if it goes in without engine running then the pressure plate springs have become weak and not disengaging properly or the clutch isn't giving full travel
