Hello,
My vintage compressor, after removing the stupidly heavy, cast-iron flywheel in order to access the crank seal, I found this:
The felt oil seal has worn a couple of grooves in the crank, that's why all the oil has been weeping out. The old felt seal goes in this small, iron housing:
What I want to know is, has anyone ever used, with success, one of these SKF speedy-sleeves? I never have, but would like to hear from anyone who has. It seems a simple fix but, is it worth trying, or just a gimmick? One other thing. It mentions about modern, rubber lipped seals but, mine has a felt seal, so I do not know if the felt will damage the sleeve. If my lathe was running I reckon it would be easy to machine the housing out so that it could take a modern rubber seal.
