Are they not listed as the ID and thickness of the ring itself, so I got some the other day and they were 78x6 to fit a 81mm hub with a bit of a stretch.

Does the governing dimension not depend on which component has the groove in it?
I have never tried it but I wonder if drill bits in the groove would help identify or narrow down the cross section size.

I have one of these, it's not perfect but can help a lot, sometimes you'll need to go a size either way.
O rings are cheap as chips but most places understandably have minimum quantities for a size which can start to stack up if you are buying one size either way.

The annoying thing is that you can have several boxes with all the sizes but none of them fit, because there's metric, imperial, Swedish metric and German metric, and that's off the top of my head. Mad.

Got badly caught by that, needed a couple of rings to rebuild the ram on an engine crane; minimum order £12 plus £4.95 p and p. £17 for a couple of 'O' rings. The main seal, I got from Amazon of all places, for pence.
If you can find things where o-rings fail which would normally mean replacing an item then I think it's a pretty good earner once you find the correct o-rings. Many people will happily pay £10-15 for a repair kit that maybe contains £2 of o-rings instead of replacing a whole item.

How did you get on. I had to look in the book today.
Leaking trolley jack. Had to replace a Quad ring and 2 O-rings, I had the Quad and 1 of the O-rings, not so lucky on the smaller one. Measured up as a 6mmx3mm. A quick lookup and it cant be anything other than what I thought
Now Ive got to hope the supplier down the rd has one and cant be arsed to raise an invoice
