i found with genorators that diesel ones take sudden large loads better than petrol ones, and bigger units are much less fuss and bother.
depending on how portable you require if you can put up with it's bulk and weight id highty reccomend a lincon vantage ( later version ). it's a big lump but youve got upto 575 amps of stick or goudgeing, plug a wire feeder upto 40volts 575 amps of mig welder, and it'll take tig torch directly as well upto 250A dc. and theres 2 singel phase outlets and 20kw of 3phase power, since i binned te genset and got one i've given up thinkiing about loads on the genorator just plug whatever in and it dosent seem to ever care

Yes, petrol welders tend to need to be bigger still when it comes to powering welders. Little flywheel mass is probably the main issue.
I wouldn't expect anybody to choose one for a fabrication business though when you consider the amount of fuel they tend to drink, and that red diesel isn't far from half the price.

Good morning gents.
I am building a largish petrol genset for site work, due to it's portability. This thing will produce about 25kva 3 phase, so not a small machine. I have a 3 phase Isuzu powered diesel genset 23kva and in it's 18 years have used it in anger 3 times, so not so good utiliazation. It is attached to the small service truck, which is what I started in, but as times change, things change. I got a bigger truck, with no genset as most of the places I visit do have three phase, so genset not required. Plus the weight. I did get the parts to build a bigger genset for the big truck, but another 700kg for the GVM reduced the load capability of the truck. This when most of the time there is power supplied for me. So now after many years the small genset in the small truck has seized due to non use and water in the exhaust from rain. This will need to be repaired when time permits, however at some sites now, as doing different things need a genset that will run a big plasma and compressors, hence the petrol version. If needed will load it in and when not required leave it on the rack in the workshop, no rain to enter the exhaust.
By the way was out on site with the new pulse mig to do a alli tank repair. The customer provided a small 3 phase genset for me to run the welder. Well and behold this little thing (I am assuming no more than 10kva 3 phase) powered by a single cylinder Honda engine (again I thing the 13hp version) ran the machine without even so much as a stutter. It pi#$ed it in. Now to clarify the welder is 320 amp but not cranked up at all, this job was 4mm alli. So again depending on the welding kit you are using which may be very kind to the supply you can get away with a small genset. It is however important to get the power quality correct as some cheap generator sets use poor regulating controls.

Good luck with your new business. Grandmother/eggs alert... but it's massively worth paying a bit extra for an insulated shipping container, rather than a plain box. Condensation and spider nests wont do those nice welders and gennies any favours at all! Been there done that..
