I had a sort of a yearning for a Unimog until I had a go in one. I have never been in anything so uncomfortable. They are basically a Tractor that seats two and has a back.
Great for off road but I wouldnt want to ride in one on the M1

If you ever take up cross-country pipeline welding it would be a good choice.

My outlay was next to nothing, I worked 30hrs ish it paid for the miller, compressor was paid with eBay crap....
As I work full time mon-fri.. I'm only left with sat sun, and that time will be tied up at a recycling place repairing a machine, air arc old blades off a rotor ect...
I'm not going into this blind, I'm starting off with a company that I've know for 20yrs that offers me welding jobs, I'm only going to work local ish for now.... There's quarry works, recycling company's, all the engineering company's I worked for in the past all pretty local...
Already know about risk assessments, method statements ect....
Just been given a fantastic contacts list too... Which was very much appreciated from a guy off this forum...

So I'm just starting off small and local, see how it goes...

I can't offer much advice but I like to see someone having the balls to go out on their own. So that being said I wish you the best of luck

Definitely go hilux over l200 after a driving both a lot there's no comparison .
From lots of experience of different types of site work maintenance of your own gear is paramount as said rental is great in a way but I much rather have my own gear with me .
Fair play for goin for it fortune favours the brave once you keep your work to a high standard and your times right as In finish on time you will get repeat customers we charge more than a lot of places where I am but we keep our standard of work extremely high and customers rather pay that bit extra for good work finished on time

Now if I was building a rig myself I should buy a chassis back transit build the back to what I required in ali box and chequer plate

I agree with the ally checker plate idea, but I think I'm going to go for the super cab hilux, and fit the miller in the middle, bottles each side, hydrovane I will mount on a small dedicated trailer as the total weight for those two alone is just under 380kg..
Plus good old English weather I can put the hard top on,

But I mentioned to another guy on here I'm pretty lucky as I'm full employed, as at the moment this is part time to see how it goes, it gives me spending money for my hobby and welding is something I love.. So win win really...
