hello all this problem is driving me up the wall the wire feed works and then stops if you turn the speed knob round to max it will then work but no good for welding and the you turn it down to 3 or 4 it will work 2 or three times and then stop again i have changed the potientimeter but to no avail if anyone has any ideas i would be most greatful

Welcome. Several people have made improvements to the wire feeds on these SIP machines. Have you seen the other threads in the same section of the forum as this thread? They are worth checking out. It will give you a good idea of the weak points in the original SIP design, and what you can do about it if you are DIY-minded. I have copied what I wrote on another thread.
My SIP Autoplus is also 20 years old. Had a similar prob initially then the wire feed motor stopped altogether. I took the covers off the welder and soon found the problem. There were 4 wires with looped ends connected together with a 8mm mild steel bolt which had rusted and allowed the connections to arc, 1 of these was a power feed to the wire feed motor (burned off completely).
I cut the bad ends off, cleaned and relooped them and joined with a brass bolt, must say its the best my SIP has worked in a while.
If looking towards the welder control panel, the bolt is on the left side under the lower cover plate.
