Im new to this so please bear with me
Have bought SIp T170W and am unble to achieve smooth wire feed no matter what settings i try. Im welding car body parts and have tried welding and adjusting speed at same time and still unable to achieve smooth weld. Asked SIp direct but no answer
Can anyone help me

It's an inherent problem on the SIPs I'm afraid, but choice of gas can make a difference, if you are using it on CO2 try Argon/CO2 mix...that'll make a difference

Wire in the correct groove on the feed roller? (0.6mm best for bodywork thickness). Correct contact tip for the wire diameter? Once set up right you should be able to get decent results from new...it's usually with age that they start playing up.

Ok will give 0.6mm a try as at moment 0.8 wire in correct grove, any idea of settings? reckon power 1 and wire feed 3 does that sound OK to you

You will get an improvement on very thin sheet with 0.6mm wire yes. Power setting 1, wire feed could be anywhere...depending if they have bothered to trim it properly or not at the factory (feed rollers should just move when dial set to zero)...3 should be a good starting point, tweak as required.

My sip 170 pro welds superb, it's been used on MS,SS,Ali without any problems from thin sheet to 6mm. I used to have an sip 130 and was unable to make much sense that, so I changed to the 170pro. I have watched the continious abuse of sip welders and felt that I had to say something good, they aren't all crap.

Over 2 years, I think that maybe the euro torch may help things a bit.

The euro torch is one where the torch unscrews from the case on a quick release (as opposed to being hard wired). They tend to be better quality than the original torches, but there's no reason a welder shouldn't work OK with a hard wired torch.

Is your brand new, or roughly how old is it? That's important to know as some of the problems that cause bad wire feed develop with age. I have an elderly 130 that I got to work reasonably well.

Another question - if it's a hard wired torch you'll be able to see the end of the wire liner just after the feed rollers. Is it plastic or coiled steel like a brake cable?

Wire feed

It has a cored wire liner and machine is practically new, think about 12 months but has not been used up to now, Ive just retired so now concentrating restoring a car. Tried 0.6 wire with correct nozzle etc and still unable to obtain smooth feed at any setting able to weld but very uneven and cannot obtain "frying effect"
SIP have just advised me to use 0.6. could there be a fault in the machine?

What's the condition of the wire? Have you ever run rusty wire through it?
Condition of material you are welding?

It's possible there's a fault, but there are a few other things worth checking.

The condition of the wire and the liner is important. Any rust on the wire can wear the liner causing it to be sticky.

Tensions for the wire reel and feed rollers need to be sensible. Set up guide here: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/wire-feed.htm

Also I've had trouble with some batches of 0.6mm tips. Try a 0.8mm tip with the 0.6mm wire and see if that makes a difference.

There's a test for the liner and wire feed mechanism involving seeing if a the weight of a bag of rice will pull the wire through. If it does the liner is probably OK. See http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/sip-wirefeed.htm

Bear in mind the wire feed on the SIPs is powered by the welding voltage so it's worth keeping that steady. So clean metal and a good earth clamp contact will influence things.

Might also be worth posting a picture of a weld - might be something we can help diagnose from that.

Wire is free in liner and good earth contact, Metal trying to weld is also clean.
Even on test piece am not able to achieve a smooth wire feed there doesnt seem to be a definate point between slow and fast. i will try posting a photo at weekend with various welds speed etc

Do the separate transformer wire feed modification - I had the same trouble as you - the difference after the modification is like chalk and cheese
