Sip 150 wire issues fixed

The laptop charger I used is a 19v 4.7a HP one. This at max power didn't seem to have the juice to spin fast enough or so I thought.

So i got a 24v 3A regulated supply. Plumbed it in today and that has even less juice at max power, I think it doesn't have enough Amps to deliver. The laptop charger being 4.7A didn't pause and continue at max power like this does...

So it looks like I'll have to put the laptop charger back in and use thicker wire!

The fuse on my control board for the same size motor is only 2A, a different brand of welder.
You may be getting spikes from the motor that are confusing the power supply.

i put a meter across the 24v and when its just below max wire speed there isn't any drop. when its at maximum the voltage drops off then goes up again.

Could my motor be goosed or on the way out as I can see flashes inside it when its at max speed and you initially press the trigger (when the 24v drops off)?

If the motor is ringing at certain voltage / frequency combinations, it would make it spark.
Why don't you put a small capacitor across the motor,10mfd or so.
Though you could try any size you have on hand.
See if there is any improvement.

cheers, I'll try that, it only does it at max wire speed. I also put a meter across the 2k pot the controls the feed and found the between 0,15k - 2k it was fine but any lower than 0.15k it started to stall the motor before it started.

Not sure where to go from here (not very good with electrickery!)

I put the other supply back in and tested low to full power and wire feed is ok. I'll leave it alone as it seems to be doing a decent job (for now).

Still on the lookout for another more reputable welder though. Thanks again guys.

Sip feed problems

Hello, Just new to the site but have been a regular user of a Sip 195 welder. Have the same problems with wire feed but used a different technique to hold the feed rollers together. I used a strong elastic band which can be removed very easily and quickly as I regularly change between 0.6 and 0.8mm wire. Also I found when using the 5KG rolls of mig wire the plastic unit which holds it has a left hand thread allowing restrictive movement when welding, over tightening of the left hand nut greatly reduces the feed and also puts a lot of strain on the feed motor, one little fix is to add a small bit of grease to the underside of the plastic 5KG mig wire roll holder and this allows you to tighten the left hand threaded nut to a acceptable level and not affect the wire feed. If too lose the mig wire roll will unwind on its own and then you have a big mess to clean up plus when you stop welding you get excess wire at the end of you torch especially on high settings on the wire feed rate.http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/weld.gif
