Single to 3 phase converter

Evening guys.
Can someone point me in the right direction. I am thinking of upgrading my welder.only having 13 amp supply at the moment is limited as to machinery. So I have been looking at single phase to 3 phase converter. Now I ain't very clued up with the sparks. But I take it that a single phase goes in and a 3 phase comes out. How reliable are these set ups. It would be a better route for me as I am not limited to what machines I can or could get.

If you only have 13a single phase available then stick with single phase welders, welding sets are not kind to phase converters and all that you are doing is adding another set of conversation losses. If you can upgrade the size of the supply it may be worth looking at but you will need a dirty great rotary converter.

What are you looking to run? I have 3ph in my workshop however my 180a mig is single ph and runs off a 13a plug, on the max setting it very occasionally pops the fuse but I don't normally run it that hard. My stick set is also 180a and it eats fuses on single phase so I have stuck it on 415v, however I believe that the more modern stick welders are much happier on 13a.

Yeah you can't pull more out of the supply than what you're getting now. You need to upgrade the supply or get a generator.

3 phase won't help you at all, your limit is your 13 amp supply, a 13 amp supply gives you a maximum of 3.1Kw to play with, even if you could convert it to 3 phase with zero loss (which you can't) you would still only have 3.1Kw but now split over the 3 phases.

The simple fact is you can't get more energy out of something than you put in, if you want a more powerful welder the only option is to upgrade your supply.

If anyone ever builds a machine that gives out more than what is put in then the only possible answer is that we must be living in The Matrix because the universal laws of physics will have been broken.

OK I get what you mean now guys..so the main supply in to my house fuse board is OK..it's the supply from fuse board to my work shed that's not big enough.

The pictures above of the machine and the data sheet.... how difficult would it be to be able to run this machine in my shed..if possible. Or am I pi@@ing in the wind .

A phase converter of that size may be around £1000 new and you would still need to upgrade your 240v workshop supply to 50a to start it.

I can get a bigger supply from my house fuse board to my shed. It's how big of a supply do I need as I am governed my the main supply in. I think I got that right

if u take the supply from the mains using a double pole service connector block on the mains tails u can fit a 60 or 80 amp switchfuse and run a 10mm cable out to a db in shed . it depends on how much u have to spend and your load requirement u may get away with less

OK am understanding it better now. I apologise but I ain't the sharpest when it comes to this kind of thing...I kind of had my heart set on that 355 welder..

Depends what you mean by 'run' really...

It'll probably work right down at the low end from a 13A source - but if you want to convert from single phase you'll be dragging north of 60A to get it turned up.

I can get get a bigger supply from my main fuse board . I just didn't know what and if I could get enough to power the machine
