single phase motor for pillar drill

just brought a nice cheap old which is 3 phase

looking for a single phase motor for it (0.5hp)

are the machine mart ones any good or not

if not where else should i be looking

dont want to spend the earth as a single phase driil would have only cost £100 more

If it was originally 3 phase then presumably it's a proper industrial machine, in which case you may be better off spending £100 on a new motor than £200 on a modern hobby drill.

There may be an issue with the shaft - the old motor may be imperial, a modern one will most likely be metric.

that what i was thinking

most modern motors are 14 mm and a 14mm spanner dont fit over the shaft

could probably lathe a spacer up at work for it though

Nice find those ebay motors, Italian as well.
True the pulley bore will be an issue, i would buy the motor that fits.
Machine Mart are 14mm shafts with keyway/woodruff slot but could just grub screw in to this slot.
Italian motors should be better and have a 5/8" shaft with same casing.

Theres a quid difference between the two.

If you have access to a lathe and can't get a motor with the right shaft get one with a bigger shaft and bore the pulley to suit. Alternatively check out Picador.

if its a 3 step pulley or a 4 ect rdg tools sell them with diffrent bores for about 14 quid if u cant get the original sleeved or bored out

I wouldn't turn the shaft down on a brand new motor in case it has to go back under warranty.

Also make sure you get the right RPM motor, 2 types available 1400 & 2800, 2800 for a drill.

Mines 1450 RPM. As the pulley ratio is usually about 3:1 on top/bottom speed 2800 wouldn't be very useful, 930 odd rpm is too fast for larger drill bits. W/A

I guess it depends on the pulley ratio but I have 3 proffesional pillar drills here and all are 2800, probably best to check.

if a pillar drill had a 2800 motor on i hardly think u could get it geared down to a slow speed to be of any use. all the ones ive seen and had have 1400rpm motors on with 4 step pulleys on ect. meddings and industrial drills also have gearbox to reduce further still

1450 is what im ordering

but the pulleys have been replaced with non standard ones so dont know how fast it will spin

You can work it out, it's easy to do.

Driver x rpm
Driven
= output rpm


Example.

driver pulley diam 100mm divided by driven pulley diam 200mm x input rpm
(1450, your motor)

100 divided 200 = .05
.5 x rpm 1450 = 725 output rpm.
