Single phase motor basics

Hello Graeme,

all induction single phase motors have capacitors, usually located inside the terminal box. I've not seen a centrifugal switch motor for I don't know how long. They are superceded by the start and run permanently connected capcitor type.

They might be split phase type, where the aux winding is thinner, altering its ‘Q’ and providing the phase shift for starting.

My oldest motor is an ancient singer sewing machine motor. 2 windings, switched individually.
I guess the others are similar but with an inner centrifugal switch.

Not all do.....

You may wish to avoid the old British motors (any old motors, actually) unless you are willing to sort out dodgy connections, cracked insulation, broken and bodged connection blocks, etc. Some of course are in fine condition.

What do you call old?
All my old machinery has British motors and they are fine!
