Inkscape is free and has a wide range of fonts which can then be saved as DXF files for use on other packages. eMachineShop used to be free but now they charge (I think) $199 per year. I have an earlier version without the most recent bells and whistles but at no cost. There are other packages around, I remember there have been a couple of fairly recent threads on this forum discussing the various merits of each. It really depends on what the individual needs. For me, using Windows XP, Sheetcam and Mach3 the above 2 packages are more than enough.
