Much the same as Wolf, ie.supplied by a box-mover with no spare parts back-up. Oddly enough, the guy that founded Screwfix sold out to B&Q & then set up Silverline. Personally, with £30M I'd be sat on a beach somewhere! but it just shows you that this guys sole intention is making money!
weldequip
Silverline = Crap.
The word 'Silverline' is used to describe an item that someone has made in our shop that is a real bodge rushed job, and is fit only for the scrap skip!
i.e John's had a heavy night again last night - he's knocking out them Silverline railings again
A lot of silverline stuff is poor quality. The welders ARE ****e. Some silverline stuff is ok quality and is really well priced - I have a few silverline tools out in the workshop. It's just a case of trying before you buy - ie take stuff out the packs and have a good look at it.
Worth noting silverline tools are "Guaranteed Forever"... Guaranteed Forever quite simply means all of our hand tools are guaranteed to be free of defects caused by faulty materials or workmanship from now until the end of time. Naturally fair wear and tear is not covered, so don't expect blades to stay sharp forever! Power Tools and other electrical items all feature a 3 year guarantee.
As with most tools these days you get what you pay for.
Personally I'm not a fan of cheap kit, for a professional job it can hinder the process.
If you expect to have your kit stolen/dropped off a scaffold then "cheap" is sometimes the way to go. With the Silverline 3 year warranty on power tools they will just swap it for new and pay the carriage.Some of it is OK for the money.Some of it is broken before you open it (Like Clarke or Draper)
We purchase it for resale,one customer "consumes" ratchets,saws,spanners,fence pliers,staple guns & hammers etc......They have 200 of each every summer and never return anything. Can't complain at that.
yep its one of those things depends on how much your going to use it and what you want it for, I wouldnt buy a sip, silverline, or clarke for that matter welder as it wouldnt burn into 1" plate day after day, but then someone welding the odd bit of car at the weekend wouldnt want to spend the thousends and thousends on kit i have, however iv got some nasty cheep DIY tools that i use around the house £7 i paid for a power plainer and it did all the doors in the house when i hung them, im sure a builder or carpenter would by dewalt or premium brand because he would use it day in day out.
Silverline is everywhere, it's cheap and cheerful stuff with the emphasis on cheap and they certainly do some 'handy' tools. I've bought silverline blacksmith's drills and they're ok and I've used them a lot but I wouldn't trust much else of theirs for heavy use. I saw a silverline claw hammer returned to a shop where the fibreglass shaft snapped off at the head on the very first blow! I've made the mistake too many times of buying something to 'do a job' rather than buying something that will do a job time after time reliably. My local steel supplier/ fab shop has racks and racks of silverline stuff for sale and swears by it if you ask him, but I'll bet they don't and won't use it! (and he also sells SIP stuff ) Rolson is another cheap brand which you see everywhere. Ok for occasional diy use but that's about it.
HI
The previous owner of Screwfix is probably sitting on a beach somewhere and due to the conditions of the B&Q buyout cannot trade against them for a given period so Silverline is run by his sons.Seems that any man and his dog can be a Silverline reseller.Once again due to the low cost of Chinese goods another fill a huge warehouse and knock it out cheap company.
