Great kit ,although i have been replacing some of my older spanners with reversible jaw type that allows use on pipes etc ,wish they would engrave the scale on the sides of the jaws ,its useful but never lasts very long at work,i prefer the rubbery handles too

The rubber handles are great when yo are beating bike thieves with them.
My Bahco adjustable is the first decent tool I ever bought, about 1986? Still perfect, no slop or play.
I just bought a pair of Bahco slip pliers, my old ones have been knackered for about 6 years. I had been too tight to buy new ones.
These are too nice to use though.

It was the ergo pliers my mate broke ,maybe a one off, broke the handle below the button,could have been nasty...ergo pliers

gav, id say just a one off manufacturing fault.

everything thats mass produced is going to have the odd fault here and there.

if its got the name bahco on it then it wont be a crap product. snap on would not allow it. if bahco got a bad reputation, snap on would lose custom/money.

Neil ,you are probably right ,but should we over look a one off because it has bahco or snap-on written on it ,most examples of shoddy silverline tools here are one persons experience......apart from their abrasives , TechnicAL wouldn't buy another router bit from silverline, i won't either.....but having used knipex pliers/cutters for nearly 20 years without any failures i won't be buying bahco pliers anytime soon either.....even if i think their adjustables have yet to be bettered...

I have built what amounts to a house using two Silverline air nailers. A first fix (45-90mm) & a finish (10-65mm 16g) nailer. The only bits done with anything else was the floor frame as that was 6" nails & a 6" air nailer cost far to much. The first fix must have put in at least 30,000 nails & the second fix around 15,000. Both are still working fine.

Just to add that I have also used two router bits. One to cut the holes for the electrics back boxes & one to round off all the beads & trims. They was a lot of both & I am still on the first bits (in fact the round over is an old one that I had lying a round for years).

i returned a tool back that cost £25, i got a new one. Yes not good for expensive stuff but for small priced used every now and again stuff they are fine for the price imo.

In the industries i've been involved with most fitters never bothered with snap-on /bluepoint or even roller toolbox's...always seen as more as car mechanics kit ,britool,king-dick,facom and roebuck far more common,as an employee i've normally had broken kit replaced by the company so buy cheap replace expensive .........unlike a car mechanic's,our jobs are rarely workshop based often having more than one fitter using the same kit ,so is more likely to get lost than broken ....snap-on made a name by using a lifetime guarantee i think a lot of others have adopted the same idea ,halfords tools are very good at the price ,our toolvan sells Teng ,seems like quality kit...

Halfords isn't too bad, because of the warranty and they always replace them with no hassle. I.e. when you've been using a 1/4 drive ratchet with an extension bar on it because you can't get in with anything else.

But the spanners and sockets flex a lot (the 10mm opens up on load an slips), which can round a bolt off which a snapon would have removed without fuss.

I've just bought a silverline aluminium cutting blade for my table saw. It does the job, but not very nice. The evolution 1 was much better.

Bahco built their name, from the very beginning, with adjustable's (they invented them).

Bahco get some space in my woodworking section; they make some decent handsaws. Their bevel chisels are brilliant (steel is absolutely superb) but they need totally reworking to get them tasty.... Never got on with workmates, I use Superjaws for woodwork. Bessey are pretty solid; I've maybe got around 20 clamps from them, for both my wood & metalwork sections, and haven't been disappointed. Lots of Dewalt gear, but not for use in metalwork.

Snap-on do some innovative stuff that are hard to source elsewhere, like; ultra thin spanners, 80 tooth ratchets, etc. SNA (Snap-on) own Bahco (sandvik) & Lindstrom, amongst others. I've seen Knippex "on the van" so I guess that's one of theirs too... I buy snap-ons impact sockets, can't see the point in the chrome ones, although they're world renowned for the quality of their chromed goods (their bread and butter products). A lot of my basic mechanic / metalwork hand & air tools come from them. Cibo, Norton & 3m do some amazingly good (...and expensive) abrasives.

I know there's a few MAC fans on here, I've got no problems with their tools, but their dealers don't seem to do the rounds very regularly and one wonders if they'll be around for warranties.

It's different for me; I don't use my tools for work, don't lend my tools, they don't go out on site & they aren't used for any other work except my own projects. I'm an obsessive "maker of things", ergo... a voracious tool nut... Where I can, I'll prefer British makers (Rotabroach, Thor, Moore & Wright, Record, Trend, etc.), because it's good for the UK (you & me..?), but not at the cost of having nasty tools and compromised work (no fun). I don't know what country owns or makes Silverline, but given their reputation for poor quality, this would be, another deal breaker for me...

Often or not; part of an emerging manufacturers strategy is to enter the market with cheap goods, get a hold, then build a name with better quality products (China!). It wouldn't surprise me if Silverline were coming up in the world...

Got myself a 150piece set from Halfords Professional.
Ive had a torx bit replaced that snapped and the 1/4" knuckle lost its pin, both replaced there and then so all in all id say its one of my best purchases with regards tools.

Didnt know about the guarantee covering the ratchets though? I thought everything was covered?

As for silverline ive bought an air stapler for driving staples through tin and into wood and it just doesnt seen to drive the staples straight it just bends them. Ive seen similar bostitch staplers drive them easily so im off to buy a Bostitch one.

Buy cheap buy twice.
One of these days il take note of that!

If they are silverline they might be "keyed alike" just 'cos the keys look different

The keys are the same colour so I suppose they're alike in that respect! The wiggly bits are different though.

.......Regarding the halfords socket sets ,a lad at work has one ,seems to have lasted well,although as with a lot of manufacturers the plastic hinge has broken .........but the ratchets are not bad ,halfords wording is "rotating parts not covered".....with ratchet spanners .... torxbits and impact sockets ,they are good value for money IMO...

Silverline sometimes do come up with good tools - my hole saw is good, but they will change suppliers at the drop of a hat so yours might be bad. They don't seem to be aiming at the quality end of the market. Most of the DIY market folk are the same - I'd not touch Clarke, Draper, or anything you could buy in B&Q.

draper tools used to be crap . they were taken over by a german firm along with knipex tools . now called draper expert. i use there electrical pliers and snips and at 20 quid a go there not cheap and certainly not rubbish , i can get over a year out of the snips using them 7 days a week without hardly any wear and are suitable for cutting high tensile wire and piano wire .its just a shame when they get blown up

First thing i tell apprentice's always push a spanner with an open hand ,where possible saves punching stuff.........my favourite spanners at the moment are facom ,but i've had some chrome come off them,they have never slipped or broken ,but i have allsorts ,draper,britool,elora,king dick,i use old draper 1/2"sockets and a king dick driver i've had for 25years at work which is great ,and a 3/8" seigen socket set which is surprisingly good,think it had a lifetime guarantee,could be wrong had it at least 5years...
