silverline tools

i've bought a number of tools from a local supplier made by silverline,my experience has been generally good ,i've never bought their abrasives which i hear are not good ,drills/taps i've always bought quality,but my generator,24v drill,combi square.scriber,d/a sander,spanners and sockets have all been fit for purpose bought at a price ....the pipe wrench/stillsons have been great and i use them at work instead of records......inspection mirror/magnet and other bits and peices have been good for the money ..hand tools carry a lifetime warranty?and power tools 3 years ...What are other members experience good or bad ?....

I second that i bought a silverline polisher to polish paintwork after denibbing, ive had it three years and use it almost everyday and had no issue's (touch wood), i heard the same about the abrasives but have never used them, for the price can't beat it really.

bought a replacenment diamond blade for a stone/tile gantry cutter.

it was worse that useless it shook its way through soft marble took ages trying to get it aligned no joy

took it back to the shop and changed for a Machrist one

I somewhat went off Silverline tools when i nearly broke my hand when a socket suddenly split. Once my eyes had stopped watering I went round the shop/vans and threw every Silverline socket into the scrap bin. Used other odd Silverline tools now and then; spanners seem especially soft.
If they get lightly used they are probably ok for a while. They stand no chance with us. I know of fabrication companies who only buy Silverline tools. and lots of them.
They reckon they get lost before they get broken. I can sort of see where they are coming from.

Chocolate cutting discs, shattering drill bits, typically bought an odd size for one job, The end of it.
Odd sockets that stretch etc.
We used to have a great tool shop down the road, now it is full of cheapo nasty junk.
Oh, set square that was about three or 4 degrees out.

Isn't that the same for a lot of other brand names!!!
Chinese don't make it cheap- quality stuff comes from China and also Crap!
I bet you the computer your viewing this on came from China
Silverline is in my mind light or amateur usage so is reflected in the price
It when I get the same quality and paid a lot more for a so called quality product that I get annoyed

I have a couple of bits, an extra long screwdriver, mini tube cutter...both are good enough to use once a year, but not much more.
I bought a combination square, forgot my good one...the numbers were printed on backwards!

Never thought silverline sockets were that cheap tbh...think i have some sds masonry drills i haven't used ,they won't see much work at home ,thankfully......has anyone claimed against their warranty?....routers bits ,sockets, spanners and non square ....square 's....there are no excuses....lol......abrasives i'm a bit more forgiving I expect cheap to be crap .....hasn't put me off buying completely,but i will be extra careful what i will purchase from them

It has been questioned whether companies like Snap-on & Miller farm out some of their high quality production to China to lower their costs. Don't know how true it is, or to what extent, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I used a set of Silverlines' wood chisels once - wouldn't hold an edge - they made a mess of the job. ...never again!

In my experience; Silverline tools seem to create more problems than they solve because of poor quality. They also work out to be a bad investment, since they have no re-sale value. I think that part of their strategy is to sell tools (I use the word loosely...), so cheap, that no-one would dream of taking them back.

yes and its crap too. I only ever bought Dells but alas no more, the newest one was pants, so i sit here on a cheapo tesco bought Acer wondering what to get next at least i knew it wasn't going to be that good.

there is the other extreme i cant see what is so good bout snap-on that justifies the prices, sure they are usually bought off the van of dreams on the never never but c'mon. how much of the price is buying the name.

China and cheap crap seem to go together.

My usage is light and very amateur but Silverline almost owed me a finger.

In the industries i've been involved with most fitters never bothered with snap-on /bluepoint or even roller toolbox's...always seen as more as car mechanics kit ,britool,king-dick,facom and roebuck far more common,as an employee i've normally had broken kit replaced by the company so buy cheap replace expensive .........unlike a car mechanic's,our jobs are rarely workshop based often having more than one fitter using the same kit ,so is more likely to get lost than broken ....snap-on made a name by using a lifetime guarantee i think a lot of others have adopted the same idea ,halfords tools are very good at the price ,our toolvan sells Teng ,seems like quality kit...

have given them a try and never again. there auto feed screw gun was particularly poor and i couldn't get it to feed screws! there drills and screwdriver bits lasted less than a weekend

Most of the stuff that gets a lot of use/physical, prybars, ratchets etc, i go for snapon. Not just for the warranty, but also the backup/service. When i decided to get a set of ratchets, one of the selling points was the replacment mechanisms are available for many years. Spares too, always seem to have spare screws,clips and bits on the van.

As good as a lot of the competitors stuff is, the quality of service isnt there. Draper had a couple of attempts to supply the correct mechanism, no joy. Went in the bin.

As for loosing tools, once in a blue moon, but if you pay more you look after them more.

As for work replacing tools broken in the line of service....

Normally have britool ratchets at work ,more than likely due to buck and hickman supplying them and spares ,nowdays my company uses Rs more,i was disappointed with Halfords guarantee which doesn't cover rotating parts ,ie ratchet spanners and ratchet handles?

i've got some silverline vde side cutters, pliers and wire strippers that are pretty good, i use them every day. i bought a silverline jigsaw when my clarke one broke after about 8 years, first cut and phooked, just wizzed it in the bin. won't buy any more power tools off em. for hand tools i find ck tools ok but a bit pricey. we have an engineers merchants near us called brabbin and rudd, long sales counter and loads of good gear. if you just want one or two screws they usually just give them to you foc because they know you'll come back to spend on bigger stuff.

Have been using knipex for cutters and pliers for years ...mate recently broke a pair of bahco waterpump pliers,wouldn't buy them, but i wouldn't use an adjustable made by anyone else(for long at least)
