Silver solder flux

My silver solder flux is drying out, is there a suitable additive to make it useable again.

I believe Borax can be used. Any chemist will have it

Shox is totally correct, I have used Borax all my working life. Just mix with water until its a suitable paste. Its good for doing neat joins as you can mix the paste as stiff as you want.

I prefer to use mix your own paste as as said you can make as stiff as needed for neat work. Fluxed rods are fine for general work where joints are a fair size

I'm still using flux that is donkeys hers old, Just add a little more water and remix into a paste, Job done and works as good as new.

The paste has virtually dried out as I don't use it very often, so I'll get some Borax solution then I can reconstitute it as thick as I want.

Definitely worth using Borax, as it has several uses, (supposed to be a good ant repellant too ). It can also be mixed with another powder, (can't remember what, offhand, but I'll have a dig around in the cabinet later), to form a basic welding flux.

Ammonium chloride. If you do a quick search on Google or the like, there'll likely be some text from references on the exact ratios to use. I think it's 50/50, but best to double check.


Edit: You'll likely also find it referred to as sal ammoniac if it's an older reference source.

Nipon (TM) ant killer, is Borax with a sweetener, the ants take it back to the nest and feed it to the others who pass it on to the eggs. Kills the lot.
