Nothing to do with metalwork or welding but I have been pondering this problem for a little while and nothing has gelled in my head – I think I need some help!
I have a canoe rack I made some time ago – the rack itself is a heavy old thing welded and bolted together from scrap galvanized angle originally from electrical pylons – it is maybe 20 years old now. There is a ‘roof’ on top to keep the worst of the sun off the sea kayaks and to stop rainwater filling up the cockpits. The roof is spaced up off the rack by a couple of inches at the front to give a slight slope down across it. The original roof is now completely done for so I have made another one – a frame of 2” by 4” with a skin of 18mm WBP ply – it is 5.4m long (sea kayaks are long) by 900mm wide. The original roof was just creosoted bare wood but plywood isn’t what it used to be so I need to put something on this new roof to keep the weather out of the ply. Trouble is roofing felt is only 1m wide, which isn’t enough to cover the roof and come down the sides over the 2” by 4” to give a drip edge. I could buy two rolls of felt but that is getting quite expensive and also I’m a bit worried about the weight with two overlapping runs along the length of it. I thought about painting the edges and then just bringing the felt down the sides by 50mm but I’m worried water will capillary up underneath to the edge of the ply. I have looked at Butyl rubber, which can be bought in any width, but that would be getting quite expensive (probably not much change from £100 with adhesives and delivery).
Any ideas please folks?
