The Fugi Cramer kit was recommended to me and was an absolute revelation.

Up until then I'd been piddling about with soapy water and tape. Absolutely pointless.

Fugi kit every time now.

As for "mess", fold back a black sack so it makes a bin. Tear up lots and lots of two sheet loo roll pieces and have them ready. Fugi tool the applied silicone and wipe the excess off on the bit of bog roll. Pop it straight in the bin.

I use blue roll for bulk and builders wipes after. Keeps the tool and hands cleaner

I gave up with soapy water not long after using the applicators.
Haven't missed it.

I found just a couple of squeezes over a few metres is just enough to help the tool glide easier. Don't bother if it's just a short run.

Main reason I stopped is if you need to redo a section cleaning and drying it for another go is a pita.
Bathrooms can be a nightmare to seal.

Even seen people use masking tape to stop that.

I often use masking tape, not just for that but it gets me a controlled edge thickness, seems to stop any peeling issues.

Let me try and swallow some of these replies!
That’s some response to a silicone thread i started!
As someone put don’t use ct1/bt 1 as they yellow well I wouldn’t that’s because they aren’t even silicone but Polyurethane sealers that leave a porous surface so paint can adhere. I’ll go with Dow Corning next time and I’ll get some in stock as I’ve seen the product many times and often wondered. As for using hand wipes to clean the area I’ll dismiss that because I usually use 2k thinners to make ‘pure’ and I actually do find hand wipes leaving a soapy residue which breaks the surface tension and water can creep under after it’s been sealed.
What I will say is thank you for all your opinions and genuine help.

Steer clear of white CT1, it yellows. BT1 is much better.

For a decorative silicone here I used some Mapei grey at the wall / floor junction. The wall tiles stop short of the floor tiles on 1mm packs. I clear CT1'd the gap then baby wiped off. When set went over it with the Mapei grey:

Better at it than me by the looks of it.

Have you used a Fugi tool? It's made from a magic rubber tree and sprinkled with fairy dust...

By and large it creates the bead and takes off the excess. I aim for no greater than 5mm.

The little black clip in sections bridge the grout lines. Without a doubt in my top 10 must have tools. Tried pretenders to the Fugi but they're just carp by comparison.

Sometimes you have no choice but to go bigger like when say the sink pedestal casting where it meets the floor is all over the shop.

I don't like using tape. My belief is as you pull it off, it lifts the edge very slightly allowing a line of dirt to develop.

True story.....35 years ago me and a workmate had to fix some brackets to the face of a very prominent building by Tower Bridge. Both 21 and didn't have a clue. A Northern firm that pretty much left us to our own devices.

Where the brackets came through the wall they had to be "mastic'd". An old hand mentioned in passing that you used "washing up liquid". So we bought a whole box. Didn't realise you had to dilute it. So these brackets poked through the wall and were sealed with white mastic. Mastic was everywhere, green Fairy was literally running down the walls. The main contractor was less than impressed...even less so when it rained.

The only issue with thinners is it can be very aggresive on some surfaces. Brake cleaner flashes off really well and doesn't have the same issues.

I thought neutral is for double glazing units? Can you recommend any particular makes?

@Sam` tell me what you like about Dow compared to others?

The stuff used for glazing is low modulus silicone, it allows for a good degree of flex.

Silicone sealer is amazing stuff, when you see massive fish tanks they are often only held together with silicone.

My lad has a Massey 3080 tractor and the doors have opening windows and would you believe the only hinge on those windows is a 4.5mmx6mm bead of silicone.

When we redid the windows I did quite a bit of research into getting the best product. When you look in Screwfix/Toolstation/plumbing/bathroom supplies place you see a handfull of products from a few brands but if you look at the catalogue of one of the big players like DOW you find there often variants with different properties to suit specific applications. Often there will be versions that aren't commonly available unless you go to a specialist supplier.

As it happens I’ve used both this week as I just happen to keep all that in stock and it’s the brake cleaner that kicked **** whey more than the thinners but on the other hand thinners does melt a few but not all plastics but I always do a test first.
