Silicone carbide grit foam wet and dry pads.

Would the use of these foam wet and dry pads effect the the paint with it having silicone carbide grit ?

not the same silicone as in polish silicone carbide as in grinding wheels

I wouldn't use them for paint myself, better to buy decent quality wet & dry paper

I prefer the foam type and the body/paint shop sells packs of 100 for around £40, i dont have enough cash right now for that. The site does say its good for painting etc.

They look decent enough tbh, they are non cracking.

theres nowt wrong with them ive used them they sand round contours no bother and easy to hold .the only reason i wouldnt buy them is because i have 40 packs of various grades of 3m wet n dry that i bought for 2quid a pack so untill there used no need

ive used similar and there was lumpy bits of glue that had highspots.Ok for rubbing down woodwork and the like but a good block and packs of wet and dry paper for larger areas of vehicle bodywork. oh and they puckered up over curved areas and shed grit.

sometimes you just gotta make the decisions for yourself £40 is quite steep for a punt try e-mailng for a sample.

Yeah there are many other factors coming into play like time/funds, hell i have just recently bought a new compressor and my wallet felt the pain. I'm aiming for the car to be road worthy by June and there ant much time left till then. I will end up getting proper good foam pads for other jobs in the future, it not like i do this type of stuff everyday, its done in my free time, just a hobby/enthusiast type jobs.

As long as they dont contain silicone then im happy to buy them, the other stuff i used kept cracking but was bought locally not over the net/body shops. I have 1000g pro pads i do use. The ones i want to buy are for sanding over clean steel for a better bond with high zinc primer.

If anyone knows of a place to buy some pro type pads in lots of grades then please link them on here, i checked 3m but all they had was low amount types so searched around for some more. The £40 was inc VAT and were at a lower than usual price from the paint shop at the time i was told.

Yes I've tried them and in my opinion they don't last and won't go into corners etc etc, at the end of the day you don't see them being used in pro paintshops do you ???
For many years bodymen have used paper on shaped blocks I wonder why ???

Has anybody tried Aluminium Oxide wet & dry.You can get it on a supple latex impregnated backing with good body.It is superior to Silicon Carbide on metal & on most modern paint systems & less likely to shed grit.

I understand they wont be the best pads but they are good enough for now to get the job jobbed

Oh and the 1000g ones i bought from the paint shop didn't last very long, ive almost gone through a pack very quickly. The Halfords green type did last longer.

Ive never got this from any other company before, i got an email saying it will be delivered between 12-1pm, that is brill having an hour delivery window and being told that too. Happy i bought from them now. Im having a look at them now and they seem good quality so far.

I also prefer the foam pads to gain better grip by hand, paper just gets annoying.
