Don't suppose you know how much oil they use when not in the air con system? Ive read on the internet about a teaspoon every 30 minutes... I was thinking of installing a 3/8" bsp sight glass near the bottom, would the sump area be pressurised when in operation? I would assume not, only the top end would be?

Im trying to understand how these compressors work before I knacker them at the moment it seems to be a really good compressor unit. Working very well for what i need..

Afraid I don't know how much oil it uses in your application, all I can suggest is that you might consider having your pipework off the compressors with a flare or compression fittings so it would be easier to remove them, then empty the oil out ,measure and put back in,then run them and try and keep tabs of the usage like that. Of course other things come in to play such as how hot they get when used etc. the cylinder or sump as you call it is not pressurised as its on the suction side.

I filled my fridge compressors upto the lowest stub. Grossly overfilled but they worked OK.

I fastened some clear tube to the stub and topped the oil up until it just showed in the tube.

Aaah crap, disaster struck!!! There was a explosion and a lot of damage! Luckily Im fine but could have been nasty.

Not fully sure what happened but I think the cheap Aldi regs were the cause, or should I say me.....

Having realised I hadnt put any way of draining the pipework from the compressors of water, I repiped all the comps to the pnuematic push fit tee before the regulators, I put a tee after the compressors and a bit of pipe with a iso valve on the end to drain any water before it drains back into the compressors. Eager to try this new shortened pipe run I started it up, got up to around 110 psi then BANG, absolutely crapped myself, shut it off immediately thinking one of the iso valves I just fitted had blown off, but no all still there.

Scratched my head as to what went boom, then saw some 10mm copper pipe sticking out the side of the frame then it all came apparent the push fit was missing, found bits of it around the garage!! I think what happened was I hadnt opened the aldi regulator and the two compressors just kept going and going and going until something gave and it was the tee! They are rated to 10 bar so god knows how much it had built up to!!

Sadly its destroyed one of the compressors! It no longer compresses, motor spins, but no compression, luckily I have a exact spare replacement to put in.

Im ditching the crap Aldi regs in favour of nothing but a direct pipe to the NRV's, also installing a safety valve and a electric pressure switch in the pipework from the compressors, to chop the power to the comps if it gets to a certain psi.

Going to cut the comp open tomorrow to see exactly whats broke inside...

I know someone who left a fridge compressor filling a massive receiver overnight by accident. In the morning he noticed the needle on the pressure gauge had gone right round and past the zero stop.

And no, it wasn't me!

Hmmm, are you running any mechanical safety valves? Correct practice is to have NO way of isolating these from the delivery side.

it hadnt occured to me that all the safety valves and swt's are on the tank side, oops oh well its all a big learning curve!

Its seems to be getting a very big project! because the pressure swt's ive ordered are 5A i need to install a contactor, something else find on my van!! All I wanted was a silent compressor, looking more like a Dr Emmett Brown creation
