Silencer

Does anyone have any experience of the silencer in link and are they any better than clarke industrial plastic filter as supplied new. I can't seem to find anything else online unless anyone have any suggestions

I've not tried it personally, but I gather you can use normal spin on car oil filters as silencer/air filters. Evidently all you need to do is match up the threads. How quiet it would make it I don't really know. Maybe someone who's actually done it will be along in a mo to comment.

i have thought about inlet silencers before , never tried one though,
but cars have them and they do quieten the rush of air into the engines alot. just take the air filter box off of a car and you can hear the difference.
the same as where the air comes out of a compressor, a silencer must make a difference

I just ordered one as they are so cheap so will update after I have tested it. Design looks similar to solberg filters the American websites swear by but I can't find any for sale in uk we seem to just get the basic plastic filter housing.

Just as an update on this I bought one and threw it away it looks similar to a solberg filter but is very poor, filter has no seals to the case and doesn't seal underneath so please don't anyone else buy one. Does anyone have any idea where I can buy a quality filter like a solberg in this country as I can't find any online.

you could use a kn they are held on by jubilee clip.
you can get a metal can similar to the one in your link to cover and protect the filter I modified our stihl saws to them coz the standard ones let metal grit into the engines pots n pistons lasted about 6mths with standard filter after mods they lasted 2-3 yrs I still have one on mine and it is at least 15yrs old and when washed it still looks new!!
dont know if they will be quieter though they just filter better

This link shows the solberg style against the original style as fitted to my clarke and if link can be believed they are very good, filter has short hoses inside to reduce noise, I just cannot find any for sale, only in USA , the amazon one looks similar but is very poor and case doesn't seal and it has no tubes inside so a waste of money really as there is no way I would put something of such poor quality on my compressor

You're obsessing way too much over those Yank filters. You could easily make something which would work just as well by sandwiching a fuel/oil filter cartridge, (they've been used in everything from vehicles to small mobile engines, so are readily available in various sizes), between a couple of pieces of ply, hence making something similar in design to the K&N one which was linked to. Those inlet tubes in that Yank one are pretty much pointless in reality with regards to the noise level, btw.

The solberg website has a chart showing db reduction but I don't understand it, but plenty of forums have posts stating good noise reductions reported after fitting them, they also do an inline silencer and prices are reasonable, just can't find any in uk as I would really like to try them before I box my compressor in, as removing intake noise would be more than enough for me and at least compressor would remain cool.

They will cut down on resonance somewhat. However, the intake noise isn't exactly the main problem area, when you consider the fact that you have what is a mechanical, noisy device sat atop what is basically an amplifier. Whether you're getting some small amount of resonance from the intake is, in the general scheme of things, not a big deal. Removing the compressor head unit and motor and mounting those independantly of the tank would make far more impact on noise than a couple of hoses in a filter housing.

Any form of intake baffle can be used to minimise any inlet filter noise, but you also have to consider the fact that any reduction in noise is also restricting flow, to some degree.

You could go one step further than that oil filter and use a hydraulic oil filter from a tractor, still a spin on jobbie but twice the width and at least three times the length!

Does it make a lot of difference if compressor is mounted separate to receiver, as this maybe my best method, I could easily knock up a frame to mount it to if it gives a good reduction or could even add a sandwich plate to receiver with a rubber insulation between receiver and compressor if it has similar effect.

Yeah i suppose a rubber spacer would aid silencing as would big rubber feet for the cylinder to sit on rather than casters or steel feet.
