Silencer paint

I have just bought a silencer for my mk1 Santa Fe, it has been sent from Poland and has arrived with bare metal and welds. It was the only one I could find that was separate from the downpipe and cat. Will have to cut the exhaust pipe to fit it. Hoping it will help it last a bit longer I've painted it with black heat proof paint, but then wondered if it would be burnt off with the heat. The silencer is after the downpipe and catalytic converter. The paint I've used is good for 220*C. Doe s anyone know what the temperature at the silencer might be?

You should be fine at the silencer (assuming this is a rear silencer?) with that paint. I'd much rather go for a lanolin coating though while you still have shiny new metal to put it on, polish up and do the rest of the undercarriage while you're under there anyway - but that is a bit more time, money and effort. 100% worth it for me though.

You would generally use VHT paint for that which is good for much higher temperatures, 800c+
Silencer could easily reach 400c maybe 500c

A 200c acrylic based paint could catch fire if it gets too hot.

My first thought was to use Zinga, but that only withstands 150*C. Looks like what I've used will burn off then.

I was going to suggest that ^^^ as well.
There are 2 kinds of cold galvanizing spray that I have found.
1. is all zinc
2. is "color matching" that has some aluminum added.

Paint on a silencer is just a waste of time and money. You have to keep re-doing it for it to look any good and keep its protective qualities up.
Ceramic coating works well, but spendy.
Stainless is the best answer.

Silencers normally rot from the inside out due to moisture in the exhaust fumes.

Never saw a silencer get very hot on a normal car, certainly not hot enough to melt your 220 deg paint.

I tried VHT when it was Sperex once - not water proof and rusted in weeks. The aluminium based sliver stuff lasted well.

i dont know what good those vht paints are tbh

brake calipers , rocker covers etc are fine in normal 2k paints , and lasts years

I also use a zinc spray.

Down pipe on my 4x4 was coated with the lidl alu/zinc stuff, it's not caught fire yet
