A few bits of mine. I’ve only ever used the Oxford mics once or twice but they are decent enough for the price I pad for them. The Lidl digital callipers amaze me for the price - £10 and they are bang on accurate against the mic standards.

I love how you have included the stuff in the blue packet, I must inform you however it is fag papers that old time machinists used

Excellent stuff for touching down with a surface grinder. Wet fag paper on the bit being ground. Lower the wheel until the paper gets wiped off and you are about 1 thou overhead. Saves all those surprises!

I don't smoke so I have to nick the wife's roll up paper - she doesn't smoke either but uses them to separate the reeds on her Oboe !

I had a nice 0-25mm mike but it was nicked ,used it to check the wire gauges when re winding mtrs. cost me just over a weeks gross wage as a 17 year old.

Can anyone re-face micrometer anvils, or is it a lost trade these days? I'm sure it's still worth it for big multi size mics, but maybe not for sub 200mm?

I sent a broken mic to Tesa, there was a 35quid fixed price repair charge.
I sent them a very worn mic. The anvils were in a state and the gears must have been chewed, as the numbers were all over the place.
It came back in a box[I didn't have a box for it] with perfect anvils, working perfectly and some calibration paperwork.

This was amongst a 99Cent lot I bought from ebay.

Sounds like I need to keep an eye out for Tesa mics then. There's a Tesa disc mic on eBay I like the look of but I'm not so keen on the price. Might try an insulting offer and see where I get.

I've sent an email off to Kemet, hopefully they come back with similar sort of charge. Might make buying a battered mic a good proposition.

Why must idiots be allowed to handle micrometers? They're not G-clamps

I got a reply from Kemet - yes they can, but only if the anvils are removable, and it'll be £90 Not bad if it's a £1000 half metre mic, but no good for a small one!

I think I'll look elsewhere then!

It was probably 2005ish. I will check later.
