There's an unusual vice on FB at the moment. A Sam vice, with very curious jaws.

It looks a close match for the ones in the RNAD camps in Gosport. Minus the rubber or hard wood jaws.

When I saw them I use. They were checking head to primer clearance on wiz bangs.

I also was warned on hitting hammers for the same reason, but was also told different hammers for different purposes are different hardnesses for a reason. So a claw hammer is harder than an engineering hammer (ball pein for example) as the claw was designed for nails etc that would not be hardened, whereas the ball pein or a blacksmith style hammer would not be as hard as it was designed to be used with hardened tools. To be honest I took this as truth and never researched it, as I can see sense in it and that works for me.

I think there is some truth in this. My old ball pein hammer are deffinately softer than my more modern claw hammers.
I have ball peins that had sort of squished over on the edge quite dramatically, but then I also have an old ball pein with a big chip out the side.

The casting features look Chinesium but the jaws are obviously some speciality which seem to have grub screws to hold something (which are now missing)- maybe some smaller special jaws.

rare vices on the uk bay at min starting -- "2 heavy duty vices" - both woodwork QR, the first looks like (under the paint job) the best Syers I've seen (ie Smith Marks, the first Uk QR patent), the second a long wheelbase Parky (mk 2)
sorry if I cut across anyone's watching these to bid, but be a shame if someone looking for such missed em

other reasons I post are:
1. The Parky has rather a clever recent repair to the broken spring syndrome (the proper cure is an expensive new clock-type spring which is diff to fit) - this might also work as an assist to a weak spring

2. One of the pix (no 6) of the Syers makes it look like there's a bad break in the front jaw, but I think this is just a digital phot artefact - risks of modern smartphone cameras - can hide defects but also make em appear where none was - and that's before all the latest generativeAI/chatGPT4/ML gets applied - watch out in the future - things may not be what they seem.

I'd seen one of these Colchester work benches before, and when I spotted it on ebay I quickly made an offer. The only thing missing is the drawer, which I can fabricate. The top I sides of the table are made from steel plate about 5mm thick, and can be rotated as well as being adjustable up and down within a range of about 12" for a comfortable working height. The springs are of a coiled ribbon type, and there is an electric socket supplied on the column for convenience. I only took a few photos. The first is of the opposite side of where the vice would be, second shows the bracing under the table, and 3rd & 4th show the spring assist mechanism for lifting and lowering the table, which is locked or released by the tommy bar on the square column.

Hand up here, my main use vice is a chinesium one that belonged to my grandfather, I just can't take it off the bench. But the confession, the screws holding the jaw to the static side of the vice were punched through by me, I need to replace the screws several years back as they were worn and sloppy from years of not been properly tightened (before my ownership) diced to clean the threads with a tap, first one punched out the back with not force at all required, I was a little shocked. So I did the obvious thing and tried the same on the other hole and the exact same thing happened!
I still can't believe that it took no noticable force, now this vice was in use for years in a farmers workshop and has been abused all it's life and it's still going strong, can't explain it.

I don't know Sergei ? I couldn't find any information about a Colchester "Universal Workbench" on line. Don't know how old it is either, but I would guess from the amount of use it appeared to have had before I cleaned it up, probably from the 1960's or 70's.

I don't know much about them , but found a source at www.globalspec.com
Look for coiled ribbon springs, also known as Constant Force Springs.

Another Record 84.

I had it for a while but the whole thing was covered with what I presume was black rattle can paint.

Literally the whole thing including the jaws

I stripped it off paint today, oiled and greased it.

This one is unusual (atleast to me) because it has got C&J Hampton Sheffield 'stamped' on it. None of the other Record 84s I owned had that.

Also stamped next to the jaw if you zoom in.

Is this an earlier version of the Record 84 or a later version?

World has gone crazy.

Record No 0 vice was in a local auction's general sale with online bidding. It was in good condition, most paint intact with unmarked jaws.

I dropped out at £12, it just sold for around £40 inc fees!
