I think those are the ones which have a funky quick release mech activated by turning the handle backwards half a turn.

Looking at other pictures on the web it does seem the cast pipe grip is only on the main body and not the dynamic jaw.

There's a rather odd looking Record vice on Ebay now :

Note pipe jaws cast into the body on one side only. Almost as if it's been put together from 2 different models. Although looks to match closely.

Any thoughts?

I have one of those SQ3 vices & they are supposed to have the pipe jaws on only one side!

I'm not sure, I think they were the last of the 'Made in England' vices, CW might be able to help with dates.

Hi folks joined ages ago but only found myself back here when I was researching a vice I have just purchased. cannot for the life of me find another one like it! So if I manage to get pictures up on here then maybe one of you can put me out of my misery.If not then I will have to spend time describing it.

Forgot to say it's most unusual part is the guide.it is solid round steel and the thread is above it.no markings except for the patent number. seems quite well made. I will post pictures with dimensions later. thanks brian.Patent number reads 9368,1905.

Well I have more pictures albeit a bit blurred, paid not a lot from a car boot sale.it was sprayed in silver,,,badly. looked to be black originally?. hoping to finish painting it once I know the correct colour.

Been vice shopping again!

This time it's a Record No 53 carpenters vice in good condition apart from a broken spring on the quick release lever. It's similar to a clock spring so I think I'll be able to repair it by heating the end & bending a new tab on it.

It came attached to this.

It's a good carpenters bench in need of some tlc. I added the castors to move it around as it is very heavy!

Did they sell those dog versions without the dogs? I always assumed they got lost but yours doesn't look like there was ever one fitted, the paint looks perfect where the screw would rub.

Hoped 2 of the 4 casters are braked.
I enjoyed watching someone, a few years ago, using a 4 wheel bench.
He was cutting with a cold chisel, odd the work was scared.
It would run away after each blow,

Well joined the American site but only one reply which didn't help. The patent came up as "device to stop vibration in propellers"? Anyway did a car boot sale today and bought a few bits, 24" record stilson in fantastic condition just needed painting cost £5. Already done just need a few pictures.old style adjustable hacksaw, triangle file(old but good quality) 50p, a roofers slate tool 50p, old style hand drill 50p, good day out and lots to refurbish.brian.

I never even noticed that - well spotted! Maybe there was a version sold without the dog but they used the same casting. I'll make up a dog for it - I assume it's just a bit of flat steel with a threaded hole?

They are braked but they are only temporary until I get the bench where I want it. The last owner must have been tall as he added riser blocks under the legs and when you add in the castors the bench is currently to high for me to work at comfortably.

I would say "1905" is the date and not part of the patent number because it's in a slightly larger font than "9368"

It was common back then to put the patent date on things. I've seen it on old Kodaks and other stuff from that time.

I bough what i think (and hope) is a 4" Swinden vice over the weekend. Love to hear any comments :
- Is it a Swinden
- Any idea of age?
- It's pretty gummed up - doesn't slide in/out & rotation lock handle missing. Any renovation tips / pointers appreciated
