I don't see that as being an issue with the Model 74 Auto-Vice, as it has an adequate metal cover. Perhaps you were thinking of the similar Model 75 vice ?…………………...........Not so clever is the very exposed screw thread to easily catch muck but otherwise a smart design.

There's a cover over the back end of the thread but I mean when you open the vice jaws, the thread is exposed beneath the jaws so stuff can drop onto it (hopefully these pics will help explain what On jabbering on about )
Bought it in bits as spares but it's been in regular use outside for 7/8 years on a variety of benches. You can see how the damaged casting is bolted to the slide, with no noticeableFair enough, it just didn't look like a great idea to have the thread exposed.
That one looks like it's had a hard life !
37 with swivel base is probably worth the starting let alone the others included.
