Yep, you could say that a flashback has to the potential to bring a person's life to a very abrupt halt. I bet that, even though you had the arresters, you'll remember each one quite vividly!

when the gasses mix in the chamber it bangs and pops and snuffs the flame out if the settings are wrong . u get used to it and stop jumping a blowbacks no diffrent u dont notice till u try and re light the torch and it wont hmm strange then u notice the trigger has popped out on the arestor ohh sh...it that saved the day

i have a mate who has gas bottles with no flashback arestors or even check valves on his torch i cringe every time i see him using them . i gave him a set and hese 2 layed back to fit them

When i was serving my time there was a know-all gas cutting in the fab shop, we knocked off for the morning break and when i came back there was a small flame coming out of the neck of the acetylene bottle, so i told him, he blew it out like a candle on a birthday cake and carried on cutting !

The nozzles look like Saffire 5 type torch to me.

Its a mini torch for fine welding / brazing work, it would not work for oxy propane heating.

We never had flashbacks on when I did my time, just used good practice and awareness. Using propane as I do now its hard to get a back-flash but I do have them on just the non reset types.
Propane is great for cutting and heating, you can get it at many petrol stations and the bottles contain far more fuel for their size, few OFW now

When I had oxy/acet I had resettable arrestors

Only had it happen once, mind you I was comforted by not having to buy new non resettable arrestors

I'd always assumed flashback arrestors were there to halt the flow of gas if oxyfuel managed to mix in one of the pipes and be ignited - exploding the pipe and letting more fuel escape.

I'm not saying that'd be a good situation to be in by any means but it seems to be being implied that without arrestors an entire tank could explode. Could it? I was under the impression combustion inside a tank would be nigh on impossible unless you tried very very hard to make it happen. Is it a real risk?

I have arrestors fitted on an oxy-propane kit. Never had any incidents but I set off an old potato cannon with oxyfuel the other day instead of just the usual lynx Africa. It was only a baby one I made in my youth out of steel so didn't shatter in my face but something did shatter a bit in my pants.

Would be good to be fully aware of the risks, the energy involved is massive.

Also, if that torch can be used with those nozzles, it's worth hanging on to. Sometimes you want a very small concentrated flame. Under a car unsiezing an exhaust clamp for example.

Yep it has that potential but there are a lot of signs and stupid actions normally needed before it occurs. Anyhow if your close enough you wont feel any pain
