I was having a some trouble today welding 12mm square to 30 x 8 using stick welding. I was working on some railings with vertical 12mm square bars and a 30 degree drop to go down some steps. The problem was the 60 degree fillet weld. There didn't seem to be enoug room in the joint for the slag to get out of the way. I tried vertical up, vertical down, down hand but couldn't get it to work. I ended up with the weld on one side of the joint and slag on the other. In the end I used tig for that weld which was slow and awkward. I tried using 1.6 and 2.5mm rods. It seemed to me that I was never going to get it to work due to the fact that there seemed to be nowhere for the slag to go. I had no trouble with the other welds around the ends of the square bar, just the tight one. The jobs done now but any suggestions as to where I went wrong?
Thanks,
Pete
