Making a punch for bending metal

I needed to make a bending punch so i did it like it would have been done 55 years ago. With my lathe and shaper. Enjoy...Bob

i learnt on one of these before getting on the bridgie miller at night school the chippings would come of the machine blue there quite versatile and use cheap cutting tools that can easily be sharpened http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnE_h5qmjpk

I had the same big Cinci i got from work. The thing was so huge i put it in my buddies shop. Yup the shop went belly up and my shaper was scrapped. Great vid...Bob

I think it looks like it is steel - but I can't quite tell from the pics - it isn't aluminium visit?

Thanks. The block is steel. Just the white spray paint and the bad light makes it look lighter...Bob

nice work bob,what angle is the point of your bending punch? also what are the rough measurements of your press? i have an old length of 6" channel and a 20 tonne jack so was thinking of having a go,my plan at the moment is cut the side peices at 1700 then 2 peices welded back to back for the top sections at 650

The block angle is prob 80 degrees or 40 degrees off centerline on each side. Here is a mat'l shot of mine for the sizes...Bob

Have been thinking about my design today and think instead of using channel for the side sections flat would be better then there is no sides so would be able to straighten something like a buck rake tine. which was longer than te
press bed.so would12mm x 80 or 100 be strong enough or would 15 be better

15mm Flat would be fine. The thickest you can find would be the best. I made one from 1" thick x 6" wide with a 100T jack on it. Thats where i got my idea for mine...Bob

Here are some parts i welded at work yesterday from 3/8" plate and they bent like a bananna but i knew they would. My buddy said just hit em with a sledge. Nope too much work. So i hauled them home and put them on 4" riser blocks in my press and flattened them right out...Bob

Shop press tire bead breaker attachment

My mower had a flat and i wanted to dismount the tire to add an innertube but i couldn't break the bead. So i dreamed up this little attachment for my shop press. It just slips on my 1" straight bar tooling. Worked great...Bob
