Shogun camper conversion?

Ow do all.

This camper i am after doing in the near future.

I am after a small camper for fishing sessions and also a tow vehicle.

I love the Shogun/Paj and have a fair few now and after a look into converting a van, but then not much use at towing big stuff off over 2ton i am thinking on another idea.




If i was to get a LWB Shoggy or Paj and remove the rear body section and make a camper body for it would it need an IVA?





I am thinking it not need an IVA as it is a chassis not Monq construction.

I have seen pickup conversion done to these but this will be down to the chassis and complate new body made from either a GRP construction or canvas with lower half GRP.

Its all down to axle loads etc then.

I could remove the roof and make a high top for it even, just would like more width if i can.



Any ideas guys n gals ?

You mean to convert one with no body alterations.

If so yes but a whole lot more expensive and less room.

I had a mate with a delica, he had a pop top roof put on it and it was a very usable vehicle for two people, and good for disappearing into the middle of nowhere!
I wish my camper was 4x4 I get it stuck quite often and is a real pain in the @rse!

You'll only need IVA if you radically alter the chassis.

Yeah ,I want a 4x4 camper , I thought about one of those snail backs that fit on the back of a pick-up , but they are a bit expensive and don't come up second hand around here .....

Its not impossible to mash a small caravan into a pickup.

I am in no way suggesting a landrover, but I would suggest you look at what people get up to with defender 110s.

Its a common enough path that there's all sorts of third party companies selling bits for them, but that are mostly diyable anyhow.

Again, have a look for ideas, and use them on your own base vehicle.

I'm glad you're not suggesting a Landrover 110, I've had one and they horrid things to drive. They are great off-road but uncomfortable for long drives on the road.

There are enough "trayback" pickup conversions out there that don't need a IVA because as @pedrobedro says they haven't altered the chassis. So replacing a pickup tub with your own body should be a good way to go.

Are you wanting a popup type conversion or something that is always full size ?

Look for a Romahome body of the demountable type that was fitted to the Honda Acty, Suzuki Super Carry or Daihatsu HiJet pick-up's. I had one and amazing amount of space for such a small body - wished I'd still got it but the Honda pick-up was too rotten to repair.

I was just checking rules hadnt changed, they can change so fast since i was last looking into cars and IVA.

Wouldnt bloody surprise me if you need permission to change the colour before you do it.

It will be a full size and maybe demountable type, drop legs etc etc. All depends on what the weights work out at when i find all the specs and what it will be fitted with. A few ways around it to keep weight down which is they have a payload of 600kg`ish + the weight of the body removed.

Best not to max it out though hey.

lol kida, that would be nothing to have another one on top of the two i have already. Got a dinghy mould i will be working on as soon as the boat is finished but thats a quick jobby.

There is no way i will divert from the boat, just spent two days sandblasting the thing and glad i did

I am lucky to have a separate work area next to the boat in the `pound`for the other projects Good and bad as it easy to collect projects lol.

Ah but then you cant stick the boat on a small fishing lake or river, not a fully set fishing boat, weekend cruiser is all it is.

I had the Honda Acty which was bloody great fun to drive i was going to get a camper body for it but never bothered, just widend the track with a set of 6x10 mini wheels to make it corner even more like a go cart . all in 550cc engine.



Dont worry guys,the boat will not be put on the back burner, i plan my projects well ahead of time and all this is research

So all is good on this idea, as said i will need to work out all the weights to see if a fixed luton body type or maybe demountable will go on. If a demountable then i can use it as a pick up aswell.

If not a pop top type half canvas maybe.

Never had a UMM but you're now the 3rd person I've heard say they would rather have an UMM over a Landy anyday. Having had a Landy I'm in no hurry to ever have one again.

What about on of these tranny BT bodies as a start point, fibreglass, massive inside and have the start of an over cab bed at least for your feet to go in I had thought about one and was thinking of taking off the rear doors and make a pull out 3ft slide section at the rear for when parked up, for bathroom or seating the rear axle might fall inline with the shogun rear axle if not make the two chassis join with a flat mounting plate and bolt together like peugeot/ alco joint
front axle ratio shogun 4.87 tranny 4.3 ish so just adjust tyre sizes to match.

I've had 5 x Series, Defender, 2 x Disco & 3 x Range Rover as classed myself as an enthusiast of the brand. No more as fed up of the constant maintenance, rot, alloy corrosion, rot, and more rot. Wished I'd "discovered" UMM's earlier BTW also got a Mahindra MM540.

Built like a tank the Umm`s arent they, 4mm chassism 2mm body, engines are bullet prrof shame not much grunt but dam great all the same. I fancy fitting a 2.8 4m40 into one, love them engines and great it looked after.

May not be the best looking beast but they stand lol.

i have even had a Mahindra MM540 rag top until it set alight one night, story in itself
