Shipping stuff from the USA?

Basically, I have a Tauco/Delta drill with no top on it. Not having any joy finding one here in the UK but a bloke over on Garagejournal has offered to provide me one for a very reasonable price. The shipping though!? Crazy! Do any of you guys ever buy stuff from the USA? Could suggest any reasonable shipping methods? The best are parcelhero or parcelmonkey, which seem to be the same company. The reviews are not great though and I worry it might never arrive..

is he a business or private seller if you book a pickup its up to you if it does not get delivered eg you will have to clam (this would prob be better for you as if gone missing you have to rely on them to get your refund if you book the delivery you can claim)

either way if he is a business you have more come back but what are you going to do to him hundreds of miles away you prob cant even take him to court

No he is just some guy on the forum. I guess you are right and it would probably be best for me to try and sort out my own delivery and then deal with the consequences if it all went wrong. The options are surprisingly limited though.. I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. I doubt I would fine one for sale over here anytime as it's an American made drill.

decide between yourselves what you will put on the customs paperwork , ive had sellers thinking theyre covering their behind over valuing stuff only for me to get raped this end in taxes

id mark it used spare parts $10 or such

2nd that years ago worked in a parsel place all packages get treated the same the only differance if you pay special delivery they get put in to a differant cage when in the warehouse but all get not nicely placed down when moving about

@slim_boy_fat I am actually going over there myself in a few weeks but I figured the logistics of getting something to arrive at my hotel and then me bringing it back with me might be beyond my capabilities haha

if youre going there give the seller a good drink to get it off on time to your hotel and carry it back , ive done it loads of times

foa guest joe blogs on the label , pre warn the hotel its coming if you want but they take stuff in all the time

I have recently shipped in 3 sets of old, but new stock JD2 M3 dies (1½", 1¾" and 1"NB sch 40) and followers from California. All right so the shipping was $60.00 or about £44.25 but because of damaged packaging and surface rust we did declare these items as used machinery parts and used Nil net rate (zero) UK import tarrif code 8517 and US Harmonised tarrif code 6909.11.20 (left hand column) again nil net rate (zero). We just added these details to the commercial invoices at point of booking the shipping and they were import duty, VAT and Fee free upon delivery to me here in Norwich

I have no idea which economy parcel company was used in the US for the pick-up but it was all organised by me (on the phone) here in the UK via the new Hermes Global worldwide service. My mate in Venice Beach just had to be in for the collection, but as this was collected from his bicycle frame making business during normal hours it was no problem

If its a heavy item forget air freight , its far cheaper to use the overland/slow boat. Its also worth checking out some of the lads that import american car spares, they can normally fit extra freight in for a few sheckles.

Really? When packed in a plywood box my 3X JD2 M3 bender dies & follower wighed in at 20kg and cost me £44.25 to Air Freight from California to Norwich.
In my experience it is cheaper to ship from the USA to UK than it is from the UK to USA.

Every week I ship pallet bars to the US lower 48 and I book and dispatch these parcels at Weight 5kg X L112cm X W19cm X H12cm and the cheapest I currently use is Fed-Ex and that costs me £36.35. Here is a copy of the commercial invoice from the one I shipped out yesterday.

Thats not bad Gareth but thats not heavy, the OP is on about a drill thats probably a lot more than 20kg by the time its crated. I crated two v8 engines, a huth bender with all the tooling and a transaxle then sent it overland/shipping. That was just under a ton and cost me £300 door to door, thats a lot cheaper per kilo than air freight.

I read that as the top for the drill only, not the whole drill.

If its only a tin cover it wont be expensive no matter which way you send it, I had visions of it being a bit of a lump

Yeah it's just the belt cover. The guy estimates it's weight as being around 10lbs so somewhere around 4.5/5kg. Not heavy, it is however 30x12x8" so reasonably long.. Most of the quotes have been around 100gbp, but parcelmonkey was notably cheaper. I'm gonna have a look at the Hermes global thing now and see what they come up with!

[I havent read your links yet] I dont understand how you managed that, [usually] anything imported into the UK WILL be subject to Duty and VAT, regardless of its condition. There are exceptions ie vehicles pre 1950 are duty free with 5%vat.

8517 looks to relate to Electronic equipment?
