Shipping Containers

I'm looking at using shipping containers to add space to my workshop. First one to be a small paint booth and then when I have some spare cash I want to add four larger ones to the rear as a two story space. Could anyone recommend a company that sells them reasonably and would deliver to Aberdeen?

There are a few places on the trading estate in Dyce, Bridge of Don area. Look for ISO cubes used to send supplies offshore. When they fail integrity test they are no longer used for this and often sold on or scrapped. With the current market conditions I suspect that there should be a good few kicking around. The smaller ones should make an ideal spray booth, but don't forget to ventilate it correctly

Be quick, scrap prices will likely to go up after Christmas and containers will get more expensive.

A welding firm at the bottom of my estate works out of two steel containers and does so brilliantly. One is a 20footer and the other a 40footer, about 8 feet apart with cladding as a roof over the void. Because of this he pays hardly any rent as he started out with just yard space the lucky sod

Getting quoted (for 20' containers) £1800 delivered and then upwards of £2k, does that sound about right?

A fridge until would be nice but don't know if I could afford one, especially up this way.

I was hoping for about £1200 delivered. One company quoted me £540 just to deliver it but reduced it to £400 cash. Good ole Aberdeen prices.

My 40 foot 'hi-cubes' were £4.8K each delivered and sited. But they were 'one trip' containers. ie they've only once been loaded and shipped into the UK so were less than a year old when I got them. That included fitting a 'locking box' and spraying them NATO Olive Drab so they fade into the back ground. Hi-Cubes are by far the best for our sort of use as the extra height means much better usable space. I rent one out and it's just paid it's capital cost back

I would have thought been close to Aberdeen [thinking docks/fish] they would be plentiful.

A mate has 4 multiplexed together, [ceiling height is a bit low but no lower than a sea container], they make excellent work units. Also quiet, warm, and not easy to break into.

I'll keep looking. Just measured where I wanted to put the first one and it won't fit a 20' because it narrows too much. It's awkward shapes but there's loads of wasted space at the moment so I want to utilise it better. It is just a hobby workshop so can't be spending too much.

Cut it down. They are modular so can be cut about quite easily. I've turned a 20' unit into a shed, so it doesn't look like a wagon back, I put a slope on the roof by unbolting the roof and then cut the sides down, then dropped the top back on. A little different to tapering it vertically but shows it can be done.

(The day it was delivered the driver wouldn't drop it in place, so it ended up on the nextdoor neighbours drive
I'd done the roof chop before hand so knew it was going to be easy to strip. Took me n mate a day to move the base including the steel chassis 20mtrs onto it's footings, and rebuilt. Still standing rock solid 15yrs later)

Good thinking, your not just a pretty face. That would be just the trick.

Apart from the internal floor, which is 1" ply, mine are entirely welded together - the only bits that unbolt are the door hinges

Id have thought peterhead or dundee would be your best bet for containers in aberdoom. You could also look at portacabins, they tend to be insulated too. Haulage with a hiab is going to be expensive

Most of the offshore containers tend to be yhe smaller ones square foot print.

Wasn't so long ago a used 20ft was £300 round here.

Shox Dr has got me thinking about getting them modified to fit would be superb.

Any small fabricating companies out there that would fit it out do you think?
