Went to hang a gate the other day & found that my opened bag of rapid cement wouldn't go off ,even when used neat.Now,it had been open a couple of years yet was completely dry & powdery,the print on the bag was un-readable so i'm guessing the age.anyone found a storage life for this product?

A friend who did big flooring projects (think MBB's aircraft hangers) said that there was no point in trying to seal up bags. It degrades whatever you do. And I would say more so for quick stuff. 2 yrs is way to long.

Generally its two months after opening,although I've used cement after 6 months.

Moisture of any kind, even the humidity in the air will make it go off.
The water causes a chemical reaction to take place - when it "cures" or hardens.
Wikipedia words it better than I can:-
"When water is mixed with Portland Cement, the product sets in a few hours and hardens over a period of weeks. These processes can vary widely depending upon the mix used and the conditions of curing of the product, but a typical concrete sets in about 6 hours and develops a compressive strength of 8 MPa in 24 hours. The strength rises to 15 MPa at 3 days, 23 MPa at 1 week, 35 MPa at 4 weeks and 41 MPa at 3 months. In principle, the strength continues to rise slowly as long as water is available for continued hydration, but concrete is usually allowed to dry out after a few weeks and this causes strength growth to stop."
I was told years ago that once it has come into contact with any amount of moisture, the reaction has begun, and this can only happen effectively once, so if it has absorbed any moisture (even from the air) it doesn't react properly afterwards (ie, the "second" time) and most of it's properties will be lost. Looks ok when you're mixing it, though - as Nickk can testify!
