sheet steel prices

Hi folks, i know i can call a metal suppliers but i need the info now as i am tring to work things out to keep my head from exploding.

What i am after is the rough price of a sheet of 8x4 6mm sheet of mild steel to replate a narrow boat bottom.

well that is dam good news mate, mainly as my boat mite ned a new bottom and i can afford that lol, my god to get the job done will cost near £5k, but labour aint cheap is it for welders an, well mention the word boat and triple it lol

Depends on how much you buy really, we're buying steel every day so get some decent rates.

Ah so discount for bulk, not a bad thing as i deliver a few engineers and i could gte them to get me some on there account i guess.

Try a stockholder who deals in plate only; marginally better prices than a general bar/section merchant.

I tried everywhere around where I live and the cheapest 6 mm I could find was £75 for 1000 x 1200 for a welding table. It would seem we get ripped off in the South.

^^ That's the key bit and much more important than location. Paul has employees and does structural steel work i.e. when he says he buys daily he's not talking a sheet of this and a single length of that. I'm one bloke that typically makes smallish things, often fiddly/with lots of shape in them. I can spend a week making stuff and not even get through a single 2x1m sheet. A case of beer is cheaper than buying them individually...

We're paying £57.20 for a sheet of 6mm HR4 P&O. That's buying it a pallet at a time though.

HR Plate doesn't tend to come on pallets....HRP&O may well do, a lot will depend on the supplier though....john tainton

When you order, specify under you max crane or forklift capacity, we tend to specify sa max 3tonne lift, although the capacity is there for more, it makes it easier- so any bundles/stacks need to be separated by dunnage.

I think we get ours from uptonsteel. Reasonably priced if you buy a lot. You'll need to fork it off though remember as there is often other pallets on top of yours even if you do feel like lumping 10 sheets of 6mm off an artic!

what i will be doing is using my trailer to collect it, then they can drop it on the trailer for me on a pallet or blocks, i am going to call all local stock holders this week and see what my contatcts can do for me. either way its affordable for me .

You may already know this, but ten sheets 2.5m x 1.25 x 6mm will weigh 1.47 tonnes,, or 147.1kg each.

Nope i didnt know that kida, but thanks as i was just trying to work it out lol, i have a 3.5 ton Ifor trailer that i will be using.

I got myself some prices, i cnat believe how much they can vary, good thing is though the cheapest is the closest to me lol at £72 + vat an 8x4 x 6mm sheet, all others were from £75 upto £118 a sheet, i still need to see some of the companies i deliver to to see if they can save a few hundred on the VAT for me.

Still less than £900 for the materials isnt to bad
