sharpening hss bits

I have a 750SP bought from J & L a few years ago, it's ABSOLUTE RUBBISH

it grinds the relief/clearance angle the wrong way so it rubs not cut, (apparently they produced a bad batch)

Wonder how small the batch was. I was given one in the 80's and it sharpened backwards.

Given the amount of cheap chinese bits I keep seeing on the shelf sharpened backwards too, I wonder if the that's what they're using to make 'em!

I bought a similar jig off an old geezer that was a machinists at one of our gold mines.

His lathe HSS cutters are so beautifully sharpened that I havent got the heart to use them.

I sharpened a drill backwards intentionally once to use it to drill into a large broken bolt in a blind hole (no extractors).
Lots of force and the drill bit into it enough to wind the bolt out.

Those dodgy sharpeners may have a purpose after all.

Brightspark - I could do with some instructions too... I have one of these jigs but never got around to using it yet (so far people keep donating decent quality sharp bits so I've not needed to sharpen any yet)

And keith19, I tried to get the man I work in the machineshop at work with to show me but he just got a bit grumpy so I decided I'd have to teach myself. Times like this I really, really, really wish I'd taken an apprenticeship! Still, c'est la vie!

Also, sharpening 3mm bits? Eeek! Would it not be cheaper just to replace the wee ones?
