Sharpen drill bits.

Hi guys,

I have been reading, and watching video about the sharpen my drill bit, I have basically 2 set of drill bits one HSS and a normal one, they are both very damaged.

Basically my drill is drilling to fast so I damaged the 2 set. I have just finished a nice work bench.

So I am thinking I should get a bench grinder Lidl has a cheap one at the moment and an accesory on the side, to sharp them. I think I have nothing to lose with those as they are going to the bin otherwise.

I should get a good drill soon, I can't wait mine is really not good.

I have seen video of doctor drill but the price is pulling me off, as it is a bit hard at the moment

Hello SF,

if you can find someone to teach you how to sharpen freehand, it's well worth while. I've never bothered with these grinding jigs.

Also it's worth buying good quality drills, e.g. Dormer or the like, cheap drills are a total waste of money. I don't understand what you mean by normal ones as the common or garden drills are HSS?

Out of my 2 set 1 is HSS and this other is standard. I fully agree on the good quality tool.
I am going slowly on buy my tools but I am try to get some quality one, so it make the job easier I think.

A couple of drill bits I have are worn so I need to try to get them sharp.
I think I am going to simply have a go at it, unfortunately I know nobody arround whom could show me I look at few video on internet it should be ok
Worst think could happen is they will be damaged but as they are already.

Yes, my neighbour who used to be an engineer before he retired showed me how to sharpen drills some years ago.

I haven't had to buy a drill since!!! Can even sharpen spot weld drills if you are careful.

Get someone to show you!

I use a Clarke bench grinder that I bought on special offer from Machine mart- the packaging was damaged, but the grinder has been great for years now! :-)

It's easier to sharpen bits over 1/4 inch by hand. Once you get the knack of sharpening on a grinder all you need is a drill gauge to ensure the correct angle for your work. Anything less than 3/16 inch I just buy a new bit.
The model builders on this forum will have a special jig to resharpen their bits. They need much greater accuracy than most of us. There was a thread on this sometime back, about a year ago.

i put a post on about making a fine feed adjuster on a sharpening jig with pictures and details of sharpening drills but it had to be removed as was sumone elses design i emailed a few people the details but theres about 8 pages on the subject takes time to send em

I use 2 metric nuts held together flat to flat....the included angle beneath where the nuts touch is 120 degrees,,,,drills are normally 118 degrees,so close enough ,you will never be asked if you are sharpening your darts

Are Imperial nuts the wrong angle then Gav?

yeh there only 55 degrees .........ok any hex nut will do

I got a bench grinder from lidl. So when I will know how to I will be ready.

For the moment I will keep the non sharp one into a box.
