Sharp bits and MOTs? (Disco 1)

The disco 1 has these plastic lumps on the end of the bumper -

Except mine does not -

As i understand it, integrity of bumpers is not included in MOT checks, however, i cant think having some forward facing hook thing is acceptable.


If i unbolt the hook bit, would that be acceptable? Or would i need to plate over (smooth over) the end?

I realise i need a stick on reflector.


Please note, this is very much a working vehicle, not a show piece.

Plod around here would deem that as dangerous and give you a ticket, not worth the ag for the sake of a new or s/h bumper cap .

Sisters Metro failed MOT for missing bumper caps close to 30 yrs ago - can't imagine it's got any slacker in the intervening years . . .

one of my old transits was like that.
I sprayed a football sized blob of expanding foam on the end, cut it to shape with an electric carving knife, and painted it with black gloss.
went through two MOTs like that.

Seen the same thing but with a thick piece of celotex insulation,cut to shape,stuck on and painted,lasted ages and went through 2 mot's

I've just looked up the cost of new ends. They're about 1/2 the value of the car... : )

i dunno about "non metal" - it has to be something "not sharp" - and a 3mm thick piece of steel, even with 10mm radiused corners is apparently counted as "sharp".

Well the bumpers on my truck ate all steel Inc the edges, they are not Sharp and they go through an mot fine
I do need to sort one out for the mot when I get it back on the road tho,

Chop the"hooks" off, plate the open end and smooth the welds so there's nothing to snag/catch.

As long as the sharp edges are covered up pass no problem
Imagine some clumsy person walking in to that

Buy a piece of turf from B&Q then cable tie it over the end. Job done and it's match the rest of the greenery on the bodywork so nobody would notice
To be honest I'd take it for an MOT first as you might be worrying about a trivial thing like a missing end cap when there might be other items that make the vehicle not worth repairing.

After seeing the rot on my 200TDi at 6 years old and scraping my nice looking 300TDi due to hidden rot I don't expect much from an old Disco other than it to be an engine donor for Series
