I wonder where H&S stands on that.
A shaper that follows templates.
One for £645 here:http://homeandworkshop.co.uk/shaperpr.htm?49621
It's clean and got it's vice but even so...
Thing is ronan he is only using the shaper because it's the only machine he has got that can do the job it's doesn't sound efficient by the time he will get the finished item out. The fact he only gets a few basic jobs a year that fall into the category means he will probably continuing doing such jobs in a sideways thought method.
You are probably right rocketman, but we have all been in shops where the old guy who owns them, has a few machine tools which are well out of date or completely obsolete, but are kept anyway, and do the odd job to justify their existence.
It's a tough one I have seen so many toolmakers go bust over the years. There is the category of the ones that won't change/bring new tech/invest in training in new tech which usually has a guy at the top thinking they will be fine just carrying on as they always have done - quite honestly in my game I cant think of one of those type which hasn't closed or gone bust.
To me with this particular guy he should have put the job out because reading between the lines he has probably spent days on mucking around on what is a doddle of a job if you have the right kit. He should have been spending his time on the core activity of the business.
Rocketman, you could be correct. Anyway we are well of the topic of shaping machines. Basically shapers for amateurs- good, shapers for professional use - forget it.
Do we all agree there's noting better than a shaper for keeping you in the shed all evening?

'Sorry I can't come in till the shaper's finished this job darling, daren't leave it and I only just started it running, I'll fix the catflap/shelf/fuse as soon as it stops'
BTW one of the guys who runs a tool room I know has shaper at home in his little work shop he is fitting out for hobby stuff.

Now if we want to waste time with H&SJust lopped a huge 2.64 mins off it now, does that help at all?
There was a large planer at one of the places i worked in years ago, it was sometimes used for frames that were used to mount large motors, it was ideal for the job. Not quite as long as the one in the video below though.
