Shackle brackets

Evening all, can you give me some advice please.

I bought a couple of weld on hinges and I want to weld them to the underside of the skip on my dumper and bolt a shackle to each of them . The reason for this is so that I can pass a chain through them and wrap it around some tree butts that I have to drag out of a wood. I am hoping that by tipping the skip forward and then chocking the chain around the log, when I put the skip back down this should lift the front of the log making it easier to drag along.
My question is ; firstly do you think it will work and secondly , I have a 200 Amp arc welder and a 240 amp mig welder, which do you think would be best to attach the brackets with.

Sounds a reasonable idea question is how good is your reversing and welding

Don't see why it wouldnt work.

Welding method? I'd MIG it, some would stick weld. Depends which method your best at i suppose.

Not one of the easiest positions to weld in situ if you're not well practised.

i would stick out of preference but both machines will do it.

as said above that's a tricky angle to weld though unless you can move the bucket to a better position

if i was welding them on id weld them to a decent square piece of plate on the floor or bench and then weld them to the bucket . much stronger

Yeah, fair point BS, dumper buckets are what, 6mm tops? Even if the weld doesnt fail it will pull a lump out of it.

Exactly what i had in mind. Bit of 8/10mm plate would be nice.
Personally, I'd use the Mig.

That's exactly what I would do

I did this with a dumper I was using years ago , and we stick welded a big D iron on the back of the bucket and put a chain from that over the bucket so the bucket helped with the leverage to pull the stumps out of the ground.... jeff....

I have got a couple of bits of thick plate, so I will weld them to those and then to the bucket. cheers

Managed to find the bit of 12 mm plate I had knocking about and welded the brackets on. Tomorrow I will attach them to the skip, the top and the 2 sides shouldn't be too difficult I am a bit concerned about welding the bottom edge though as I haven't tried to weld overhead before. Any tips ? I was thinking of drilling 4 decent sized holes along the bottom and plug welding them , would that be any good do you think ?
