SGS gas confusion

So few months back(last Nov) i booted BOC out(after 15yrs) and went SGS at a local motor factors(like a mile away) for my mig gas,sorted no problem
Yesterday i went back to get a bottle of pure argon,have had a tig welder for 6 months and not used it yet yes i know
£248.48 all in for a 20ltr bottle
Heres where i'm confused,when i asked the guys at the motor factors can i exchange this anywhere that does SGS they said no,reason given was you're not buying the gas from them but us,excuse me?
I was on the belief those that stocked SGS gas were mere agents not owners,one garage i do work for is smack bang opp a tool hire place thats also an SGS gas holder,but thats 9 miles away from me
All i got with the purchase was a receipt and thats it,no bunff about refundable deposits etc or any other info etc,yes i know i should have done more research blah blah blah
The chap did say we dont care where the bottle came from long as its got the SGS sticker on or show the receipt,but is that the same for everyone?
Someone give me a slapand say dont worry about it,or educate me on what the score is

You can change it at any SGS stockist, (prices vary a bit for re fill).
Keep the receipt safe it is your way of getting cyl return money.
It proves what you paid.
Members get a discount on first cyl.
Send a copy of receipt to head officen saying you are member here and your forum name +real name and address.

That sounds expensive even for the first bottle. It pays to shop around, there’s a big difference locally to me for sgs stockists, like 25% or more…
Motor factors were by far the most expensive, an agricultural suppliers was miles cheaper

Its all about logistics,tool hire place was £235 all in(pure argon,mig mix is cheaper),but as said thats 9 miles away and they dont deliver wheres the motor factors are used by 3 of the garages i do work for uses them,del is free,but only to those places
This works out far better than BOC for me,but thats another story
Its a case of six of one and half dozen of the other

I bought SGS argon a couple of years ago and after some ‘constructive’ arithmetic by the guy in the store I ended up some £250 out of pocket. There were a whole load of numbers and figures and %s bandied around, but I just wanted to get my new tig going so didn’t make too much fuss about it.
I think I have the receipt somewhere so when the bottle is empty I should be able to get ‘something’ back.

I have an Argoshield bottle deal with BOC, for my Mig welder, but I’m trying to focus on using Tig as much as possible nowadays so I may bin the BOC £60++ a year rental and go for an SGS Mig bottle too.

^^^ That is the theory, in practice the dealers often don't see it that way. Years ago I had a moan at Steve (?) who admitted that there is little that he can do to enforce it.

Right now, having not used Mig for years I have an empty SGS mixed gas cylinder and a deposit receipt from my then local motor factor who has since been bought out and closed down by GSF/NAPA.
As I have agreed to buy another MIG at the end of the month, I need to get on sorting out a new supplier.

If you wanted to switch supplier, return your bottle to the motor factor and get you deposit back. Then go to your new supplier, new bottle new deposit.

Can only do that if the original supplier still exists.

Never had an issue swapping an empty bottle with any dealer.

Usually use 4 local but have had to swing by others on those oh darn moments.

Only becomes a major problem if using the 30 or 50l bottles as not many people stock them.
(10 and 20 are common as muck)

Yes I came across this when I called into a place that wasn’t my regular supplier so I swapped the 30 for a 20 and they refunded me the difference in the bottle deposit .I’ve stuck to the 20l ever since

We did do this but I've managed to end up with a 30L and 2x 50L bottles now.
This way got loads of time to worry about refills and getting to my local supplier.

(Was running 2x20L bottles but the prices drop considerably per fill for larger bottles)

Getting a refill from a different distributor can sometimes be difficult due to modern computerized accounts systems needing an invoice number in order to be able to raise a credit against the empty cylinder.
Not all of our distributors are so constricted by their accounts systems but many are.
If a distributor ceases to trade we can always sort out refunds directly with the end user even though we do not sell direct to the end user.

I have also moved from Air Products (pure argon) to SGS to avoid rental.....however the AP (10ltr) cylinders are filled to 230barg @ 19C and the SGS only target 200barg. Mine had 180barg...complained to SGS, who were a little evasive, sighting temp variations. Boyle and Charles laws were my bread and butter.....
A lot of gas difference on a 30ltr cylinder ....

SGS? The AP bill was for a return, as they had given me the generic rate (by mistake, and blood pressure!), my contract rate was fraction of that. The difference between AP (200barg) and SGS (180barg) ...On a 30 ltr cylinder that's 50barg-diff x 30= 1,500 ltrs short.

I have just found an SGS suppliers a mile or so down the road from me in Bury, also one anity further in Bolton. . I am with BOC at the minute and have been for years but the rental is £78 for a Y size ( and going up by £10 from next month for non DD payment ) and refill not sure now but about £70. I an on Argoshield now but its still half full. I mite go to SGS for the Tig gas now as i have a Tig welder again. A 20l Argon is £225 outright and £105 refill. so as i wont use it much i reckon its a done deal to get my Argon from SGS and then next year a new Arg/Co2 for Mig from SGS. at about ££200 and £80 refill.
