Setting up Gas Shield - Lincoln

Hi all,

I am looking to restore an old car and looking at buying a mig welder to do the usual panel and fabrication work you might expect. (I have never welded before)

I have my eye on a Lincoln SP-170T which after reading these forums seems to be a reasonable choice for what I want to achieve.

The problem is that this welder is set up for gasless welding only.

The seller says that he does not have a regulator or gas hose for it either.

I want to know what I would have to buy/do to use gas shielding on this welder so I can factor this in to the cost.

Also do you think this is a reasonable price for the welder?

Hello Pete,
I have the same model Lincoln, All you will have to do is reverse the two power and return lead connections, easy to do, they are just inside the wire feed compartment, You will then need the regulator and hose, The SP 170 is excellent for thin sheet welding using gas,

Thanks for your reply, can you confirm that I wouldn't need to buy a different nozzle/handpiece?

Also will a generic gas hose work or are they specific to the model of welder?

The existing mig torch should be fine,as long as there is no damage to the nozzle end as some people use the torch without the nozzle shroud for better access, Also any hose that is compatible with the gas being used,I use hose that is used with calor gas/propane heaters etc.
