Hi! can anybody give me some advice as to the cause of serious sparking from a single phase vacuum cleaner motor. It is accompanied by a clicking noise and that " electrical smell". My 40 year old memory of O - level physics says brushes and commutator but this seems worse than the usual sparking associated with these.

one of the windings on armature has burnt out and the pickup segment will be burning away and come loose making the brushes jump the gap making the ticking noise

dont know about welding but certainly burningStrange first post on a welding forum.
