Septic tanks - beware rule changes in Cornwall !

It's not a new thing by any stretch of the imagination. Where I lived previously 25 years ago they were spreading human waste in the surrounding fields

remember 20 years ago seeing a ruddy great tanker on a tractor with a stack of pipes coming from it and a bar behind with pipes going in to the soil a big road tanker was there filling it up . just asked a crop sprayer i knew what it was they were doing . pumping blood from the abattoir in to fertilize the soil then they banned it as a health riskl

In the 70s, I recall reports of fish becoming hermaphrodites / asexual or something like that. Cause apparently was the 'pill' which was putting Oestrogen into the water and of course, ultimately into the drinking water. I remember warnings that it would get worse and that the effect on Human health could not be predicted.

I always thought a septic tank was supposed to be self consuming, and shouldn't ever need emptying.

Until people start dumping bleach down their toilets, and running the washing machine into it, I guess

We had a four cell septic tank built for our house in the Philippines, it wasn't emptied in the four years we lived there.

They've trialed spreading the waste from sewage works round here . I think they stopped it because of the other rubbish mixed in - and it stinks , worse than normal farm yard muck !

Last summer they sprayed some stuff on fields around my village, it stank awful. I like the smell of normal muck spreading, 'the smell of the countryside', I call it, but this stuff was more like the goop you'd dig out of a blocked drain pipe, it was horrible.

I would agree and add BPA is also a big contributor.

Dairy farmers around here used to spread every day. Was not a bad smell at all.

These small farms all died out, and the large operations 3,000-5,000 head run a slurry in pits/tanks/lagoons and spread a few times a year as a digested slurry, and it smells "bad".

human waste can be used as fertiliser from the past decades as didnt contain much tablets then or birth control

the issue starts with alot of medicines in use today

im not saying too much but ostrigen is found naturally

On a similar note International paints just got fined 650k for dumping a waste tank of TBT antifouling waste into the river yealm from a mothballed site.

Cornish farmer type guy I worked with years ago reckons chucking a whole dead rabbit in is the key to getting the bacterial process going properly. We never tried it, there's no rabbits in the Philippines.

we just used one of these....our's was checked and the outlet water was OK to release into a stream....
this size was for 15-16 people....
NO STINK......and there was fish and crawdads in the stream.....
bought mine in Southampton and delivered it to our house in France......
Incidentaly the National trust use em in diff places....

Back in the 80’s, I worked as a driver for the medical research council. A couple of the doctors there were in the middle of writing a paper on Oestrogen in the water supply.

The results were more to do with showing reduced fertility in fish, and the possibility of that reduction ‘spreading’ to other species. Conclusion; less fertility, but no, not turning people into trans. Transsexuality, like homosexuality, has always existed, it’s just that it is considered as more acceptable by the mainstream just now.

So don’t worry, swimming near a sewage outlet pipe, won’t make you wear a dress. You’ll need a better excuse for that.

Same here, except ours were concrete. 3 and 2 cu. mt. running into a 45sq mt drainage field (network of pipes on gravel with thin slots in the underside of the pipes)
Takes care of itself, though you are supposedf to have the tanks emptied of any sludge every two yrs. 16 yrs now....
Back in portugal, you hung a chicken in a plastic bag in a tree for a few days, then chucked it in the foss septic. That turbo charged it to get moving. Ours wasn't touched in at least 20yrs.

12 years of experience in operating a local treatment tank, for a family of 5, such. Three-section tank, 2 cubic meters. 1 section, anaerobic bacteria, 2nd section with aerobic bacteria living on twisted vertical nylon brushes + air supply by a compressor, to the bottom of 2 sections (aerating). Section 3 - a layer of lime gravel is poured on it, to neutralize it seems phosphates. Gray water after section 3 is overflowed into a small filtration field through a perforated pipe. I noticed that the wild vegetation on the filtration field is noticeably brighter and denser. The outlet water does not smell. Modern washing powders and other chemicals are used. Toilet paper is flushed down toilets. Diaphragm compressor, Japanese, works on a timer, it seems that it consumes 80 watts. (electromagnetic rod drive to the membrane)
