Separating drill chuck from arbour

I've bought a keyless Albrecht drill chuck off Ebay but stupidly didn't check the arbour size - it's got a MT3 and I need an MT2

The chuck itself has a J6 taper so planning on 'just' swapping arbours. Anyone got any tips on removing the current arbour, guessing it's been in there quite a while and have a feeling it's going to be a ****** to shift.

If you open up the chuck all the way, there might be a hole through it so you can use a drift to knock out the arbor.

Thanks fot the suggestion, I did check that but there's no through hole Shame as otherwise it would have been a 5 sec job using a press

hold the mt end in a vice and clout it with a hammer

i may have a 3mt to 2mt adapter if you get stuck

Mine was the same way.

I finally just clamped the arbor in a vice and drove a cold chisel as a wedge to separate it. Screwed up tha rbor, but the chuck was what I wanted.

I think J6 is smaller than MT3. That means there should be a step up in the arbor. I would take a piece of flat steel and cut a slot to match the narrow part if there is room between the tapers. then you can use a wedge to try and separate them. A bit of heat may help.

Yes, a very shallow wedge is the propper tool, last one i took off needed a little heat, in there solid.

I tried a home made wedge but it just deformed, had a go with a cold chisel but was getting nowhere fast. Was about to give up and order the proper wedges but whilst spinning the chuck in my hands I realised it could be taken apart very easily Stripped it down as far as I could and was then able to press the arbour out of the body Even managed to track down of all the ball bearings after they spilled across the workbench !

All back together, appears to be working a treat and replacement arbour is on order
