Selling on Gumtree...

Anyone ever used Gumtree for selling? I normally sell on eBay, but fees have started to make it impractical for shifting on a lot of our 'stuff' which is a mixture of Workshop items and weird household stuff.

I have also tried the Facebook selling pages locally, but this seems mostly full of people wanting baby clothes.

If it's worth a go then I'll try it out...

I've sold a few things on the 'Tree - results seem to have come from local(ish) area and folk come [or not ], pay cash and take the items away.

I'd not post stuff though, as you don't [afaik] have any protection if it goes wrong/missing/damaged etc.

Have sold quite a few bits and pieces on Gumtree. My experience is you get a lot of people asking questions about the item then not replying or not turning up after arranging a time. Eventually you will get a genuine buyer but I've been annoyed with the "timewasters" to the point I've promised myself not to use Gumtree again. But I probably will because it's free.....

I have sold a few bits on shpock.

It's a bit weird though as people make an offer you accept and never hear from them again..lol

Have you tried the "man stuff for sale south west" group on facebook. Probably a bit more towards you kind of market than the regular groups.

Bought a 6x4 trailer from a local guy who had his ad on Gumtree. It was cheap - and I noticed in one of the photos it had a builders plate so not a home build. (checked the serial number with the maker prior to going to look at trailer and it all checked out ok)
I paid him cash, everything was good. Avoids all the paypal / ebay fees that tot up. I like the local aspect of going to take a look and making a cash offer.

I have used them but you just don't get the coverage Ebay gives, I advertised two Butlers map lights for almost two years. put on Ebay both sold within an hour but it cost me almost £20 in fees.
I have some one at the moment interested in my camper van but I have had about 8 text messages, so lets see if they show up?

I've sold a few bits locally on Gumtree - garden strimmer, ally podium, butler's sink. I have better luck buying though got some real bargains.

Once tried looking for a cheap car on there. Man that was an experience.

I find it best to use on stuff to big to post. Amazon allows sellers but their fees are astonomical. eBid as well, their fees are tiny but the reach is poor. I guess you get what you pay for and eBay can basically charge what they like because folk will keep using them, sadly.

I am amazed how long ebid has been going and how it's not taken a large chunk out of eBay....

I am the opposite I would get bloody annoyed if someone came to collect it and then started haggling. Gumtree is a selling site not an auction site. They would most likely leave without it.

I always haggle on Gumtree deals i dont tek the urine but i always try to get a bit knocked off, thats when i'm standing in front of the seller not over the phone.

I have used ,www.preloved.co.uk, & sold a fair bit of varied stuff on there, £5 a year subscription & no other fees.

I usually take same approach of making offer at point of deal. I always explain why i.e. In the case of the trailer I bought the tyres were as described in that they had plenty of tread but the side walls were well perished and the date on the tyres was quite ancient. I said I needed to replace them to be safe. He acknowledged that and accepted a bit less. Both happy.

As above with gumtree, I tend to find (with apologies to those on here, who are the exception ) that you get a "lower class of buyer" on gumtree, probably because they don't have to pay up front.

2/3 of people who say they'll come to see what you're selling don't turn up so I make clear in the advert that I "won't keep it till Saturday" - absolutely first come first served.
I also get a huge amount of spam on the email address I use on gumtree so I always use a dedicated alias "......-gumtree@mydomain.com" and disable that when I don't have anything for sale.
Oh - and you'll get an uptick on spam to the mobile you use, too.

Hmmm... now that I've written all of that I wonder why I bother. Oh yeah; no fees

I know that, but her youngest lives away from home and thats why she leaves it on, me would never have any phone/tv etc in bed room,some places should be sacred!
