Pickup is being used and that is my own personal car, and its so i actually put some decent mileage on the thing as currently i only do about 4000 miles a year these days with me being a way so much. It needs used a bit more.

Probably teaching Granny etc, but don't forget to update your insurance to cover business use - I'm sure you'll have that + Public Liability cover sorted already though.

Thanks for the reminder, Getting public liablity and truck insurance is getting sorted when i get back from this trip as when it came too my renewal Aviva has put my premium up by 100 a month on top of the 30 extra they had put it up by too insure the pickup from when i bought it till the end of that policy year, i will have turned 25 by the time i get back so should be a good time to go shopping around for a new provider.

Idiots have garunteed the loss of a coustomer that insures 3 vehicles with them that arent driven much.

I have not read all the replies, so sorry if I duplicate.
If you are good at what you do then distance is almost irrelevant, you charge whatever to be wherever.
I have travelled for work as a self employed person to, California, Nevada, Florida, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Scotland, Wales and worst of all London.
If the money is right then crack on and do it.( covid might make a difference now)

Business plan 1.

My plan for for my mobile engineering/fabrication business will be ill go any where but call out fee is minimum £35 covering an area upto 35 miles from home base, and a £1 extra for every mile after that. Accommodation costs are too be met by the client if they are required depending on scale of job if not driving time and fuel costs will be charged for return trips too and from jobs.

Hahahaha id get paid more per hour flipping burgers than i do as a marine engineer with the hours i work even with my tax free allowance as im out of the country mor than 183 days of the year. This is just some thing too keep me ticking over in my time off.

£35 is only the call out fee, 1 hour minimum work charge on top of that at £45 per hr for mechanical engineering work/ £50 per hour for welding + materials + 20% of total bill for consumables. Feel it be a cheek too charge more as this is a bit of a side line enterprise too keep me ticking over in my time off, dont know if i could charge more as the garuntees i could offer would be limited. Though if you guys think i can charge more id be happy too.

Being in highlands even during the chock ablock tourist season it dosent take me an hour to do 35 miles,

Weighed up a welder generator but went with a lorch micor tig and battery instead as

1, i dont have space too store a welder generator,

2, dont have too worry about fuel,

3, if the battery lasts 3 years karcks it and i have too replace it outside of the warranty then im better off than a pertrol welder if it went bang after 3 years as they are about £3000 quid a time and most dont seem too last that long battery is only £1500 in comparison/that price will come down eventually as they become used more,

4, its the micor tig so i can offer a proper mobile tig welding service.

5, had all the bits lying around at home so i have a battery system in the back of the pickup too recharge the battery.

6, most of the time will be working out of farms or estates so they all generally have workshops with power anyway so dont need the mobile power all the time.

7, the welder and battery have already been paid for as they arent a buisness expense they were bought as a personal purchase too help with my landy restoration which is being done in a rented garage where there is no power and they wanted £10000 to put it in, so any money they make me on the side is a big bonus.

8, can offer a mobile welding service where no external power source is required but no unholy amount of noise is going too be produced. So i can when the situation requires that charge a bit more for it.

Business plan 1 has totally different details to business plan 2, from an outsiders view point, BP1 has no mention of it being a second part time income hobby type job.

The way I do it is the rate...if it's something I don't want to do then the rate is set accordingly.

HMRC have a range of criteria I believe that they use for assessment...I'm not an expert but I believe the days of overnighting in another country while the wife and kids live in the UK are long over.

There was a mad few months last year when we had guys on the south coast and as far up as Oxford and just about everywhere in-between. If our clients say jump we always ask how high, no isn't an option.

tax advice needed but it’s different for merchant seamen I believe. It’s an aggregate thing. Time in vs time out. If you have more in it resets or something. Very complicated. Accountant used to advise me, and I had to book the odd last minute holiday to get my days in.

Yeah james is right i just pay an accountant too do my number crunching for me its too complicated otherwise and i have had too take the odd holiday too make up my days. Though im usually out the country for 8 months of the year so I a safe bet too get it.

Last time I used the 183 day rule it was a minefield...all sorts of criteria.

Luckily the job came with a free tax adviser...and a guarantee that I would pay no more tax than if I had been based in the UK. Was very handy because some big numbers started flying around...client picked up all the bills and the stress too.
