depends on what u want to spend. ive got headed paper on microsoft office . punter is sent one copy one for my own records and kept on disc on comp as well .just a duplicate book might sufice depending on your buisness

I use a Scribe 855 with three-part sets. I have a rubber stamp with my details on so I don't have to bother with pre-printed stationary.

I prefer the Scribe to a book because it is a nice hard writing surface. Clear horizontal surfaces are a rarity in my workshop. The advantage of a duplicate book is that your own copies are kept together.
The taxman, customers and accountants all like sequentially numbered invoices, but I don't think it is mandatory.

i use sage accounting software, design you own invoice layout then just use normal A4 paper no need to print a second copy its stored in the program but you must back up to be on the safe side.
it also shows who's invoices are outstanding and shows how long also what each customer has spent with you the list goes on and on

I would strongly recommend you produce a copy, either by printing or using multi-part stationary.
It's a right pain if you have a crash between backups. The usual procedure is to do a backup at the end of day and file your documents. If you have a crash it's easier to re-enter your docs if they're still in the "to file" tray.
Also I'm sure HMRC insist on this.

i use 2 back up's labeled a and b and use alternatly been using sage since 1998 never lost any accounts even with a hard drive failure

That's fair enough, but restoring a backup doesn't restore data entered since the backup was taken. If the invoices have been posted (mailed) you'll need copies to re-enter the data.
One of my customers ran two companies from the same office, using two machines running identical software.
He backed one machine up, and then the other, on the same set of floppies. One day Machine A failed, his last backup was from machine B. He restored that onto machine A. He couldn't understand why he had two company B's and no company A.

we use job sheets aswell which also carry the information so if it all went i would be able to rebuild if i needed to just hope that never arises
