Self darkening mask

I have a cheapie self darkening mask..
If I look up at the bright sun....it darkens..

but 2 seconds later it lightens..:thinking:

Is this how it should work...?

.it seems dark when welding but generally doing sheet metal,
I don't weld for more than 2 seconds

Yes, that's how most auto-darkening masks behave. They darken in response to fluctuating sources of light. If you keep it held up to the sun, wait for it to lighten, then wave your opened hand across the sensor, it will darken again.

Most arcs tend to flicker and vary in brightness sufficiently, so the filter stays dark, but with very stable arcs, like TIG on low current DC, the filter will often lighten again during the weld, which can be a bit disconcerting. Some helmets cope better than others in this case, and it's better to set a long delay, as there's more chance that a variation in arc brightness will re-trigger the delay timer during the weld, and stop it lightening.

Try pointing your tv remote at the front while looking through visor. While finger is on button (most remotes send out a stream of pulses) Good way to test sensors are operating. Even a fag flint type lighter operated in front of mask should trigger it.
