Self Checkouts - Fair Comment?

I like self checkouts.

I especially like the ones in the coop near my work. If i need to pop in for a meal deal, I'm in and out within about 1 minute flat. "do you want a receipt?" No thanks, I'm already out the door.

Some things go the way of the dodo. We don't all have to like it, but some of us do

A slight deviation, but sort of connected. Carparks. Most of the ones where I live have got rid of ticket machines that take cash, now it's "pay by App". As I don't want to use my phone to pay for things ( yes I know I'm living in the last century) They have probably saved on paying out the wages for the bods who collect the money but spent hundreds of thousands on the new systems.

Not that I do it often, but find the check out quicker assuming the ques are not daft as there arnt enough open!

Didnt read all the posts but some shops now have a barrier after the self checkouts, and you have to scan a reciept to get out. I dont generally take a reciept for low value, unimportant purchases. The first time I asked nicely for them to open it and to be told, you need your reciept, I replied "no I dont" as I pushed through it and left.

Most seems to offer a choice of a printed receipt or not on the checkout, I usually press no, what would they do then?

The problem is these days the same can be said of many people behind the tills ...

It’s the look of confusion when you hand over an odd amount of money to keep the change to notes, like something that cost. £5.50p and you hand over a ten pound note along with the 50p, instant melt down and the unmistakable look of bemusement .

Card only checkouts, grrr.

Numpties using cash checkouts and paying with a card, as they can't be arsed to walk any further to card checkouts

Customer service.

It's ok if you hand over the say, tenner, It's when you say 'oh hang on, I've got the change'. Buy the time you have said that, I've imputed the ten pounds into the computer, and it has worked the change out that I have to give you. If I then calculate it in my head and give you different change, It screws the computer over and makes the till out at the end of the day

I like the self service checkouts, although I only shop for the smaller shops when wifey forgets something or we need another loaf of bread. I manage to get rid of all the change I have accumulated.

The system we use, Does care about the denominations though. It's over the top TBH, but it's the system we have to use

banks are just as bad our local hsbc closed and have to go 6 miles to nearest one best laugh is they dont give and accept cash thats another 5 miles further to another all you can take in is cheques and thats by an auto machine and need lessons on how to use it

I had that in Asda with a dozen packs of their basics Ginger nut biscuits, checkout girl said "someone likes ginger biscuits" yes I said, the horse, she gave me a funny look

While working from home, I got in to eating breakfast for the first time - some expensive cereal, bought when it was on special . . . so an early morning trip to which ever supermarket was running the offer - and empty the shelf - no-one ever commented . . . although all the poor sods for the rest of the day looking for it might have done

It's strange how we've almost gone full circle with shopping.

A few years ago (my grandparents time), it was common practice to send your shopping list to the grocer, butcher, etc and then your shopping would be delivered to the house by the young lad on his bike.

Here we are 100 years later and with home shopping we're almost back at the same place again except the lad on his bike has been swapped for a man in a van.

I have been looking through old family photo albums recently - Great Uncle Bert, stood by the family bakers delivery van in Oakley, Oxfordshire, in October 1921 . . .
