Self centering 4 jaw chucks

We have self-centering 4-jaw chucks on the centre lathes at school for the simple reason that much of the turning is square bar; setting up work in an independent 4-jaw chuck is way, way beyond the scope of the course.

You may be able to do rectangles with a lot of effort, shims and reseating two jaws to be a step further out.
Independant would be much better.

If I got Sanou sc 4 jaw I'd have to make another L0 backing plate.

It will be rubbish, waste of money. Neither of my chinese chucks were any good. I plan to convert mine to be welding positioners.

I had one in the past, when I was doing a lot of repetitive work with square bar, other than that they are fairly useless. Never seem to play nice with round bar for some reason.

If I was to do the same square bar work again, I would look for a square collet for my collet Chuck rather than a SC 4 jaw.

I had a TOS 4 jaw scroll, sold it on, used it once. I wouldn't buy another, 4 jaw independent and 3 jaw scroll, yes, but a 4 jaw scroll is just a waste of money IMHO.

For the sake of balance I have a self centring 4 Jaw. I mostly use it like a three jaw on round stock.

You're just trading being able to hold hex stock for square stock.

It didn't cost me a lot and it's handy to have as well as the other chucks.

I'd say it's low down the priority list when starting out but it's another tool in the box...
